Rick Santorum picks a fight with Michele Bachmann
By ALEXANDER BURNS | 7/18/11 6:25 PM EDT

The former Pennsylvania senator is trying to start something, Dan Hirschhorn reports:

Rick Santorum isn't impressed with Michele Bachmann's debt ceiling theatrics, telling POLITICO that the tea party firebrand is "playing politics instead of providing real leadership in the debt limit debate."

"We have the President of the United States scaring seniors by saying they might not receive their Social Security checks. We have Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wanting to cede authority to the President, and we have Michele Bachmann playing politics instead of providing real leadership in the debt limit debate," Santorum said in a statement. "I think America has seen enough grandstanding and political posturing in Washington. Since 1990, the debt limit has been raised a total of $10.1 trillion, but nearly half of that increase has occurred since September 2007. This is a serious issue and the American people deserve it to be handled that way."

It's the first time Santorum has gone directly at Bachmann, who's already taking away from the base of Iowa social conservatives that Santorum had hoped to capture when Mike Huckabee exited the race.

The only substantive difference between Santorum and Bachmann on the debt limit issue is that Bachmann wants a complete repeal of "Obamacare" before an increase, while Santorum hasn't gone that far. He's been consistent in saying that dollar-for-dollar spending cuts and a balanced budget amendment, as laid out in the Cut, Cap, Balance" pledge would be enough. Bachmann signed the pledge at a news conference today, but wrote in her own additional line about a full health care repeal.

Good observation. My take is that RINO Santorum is positioning himself to be the VP candidate if Mitt Romney gets the nomination. Then many FReepers will advise us how we should all go along with Mitt Romney for the sake of the real conservative Santorum (who voted for ethanol, once supported abortion, voted for amtrak pork and supported Arlen Specter).

Has anyone ever counted up how many different Repuke positions there are on this phony baloney debt “ceiling” issue?

And this was SUCH an easy one.

Just vote No on raising the Obo’s credit limit and the spending then reduces.

And if he still keeps printing funny money, impeach his sorry butt.

When will the Repukes take a single, sensible position and hold to it???

(Yeah, I know. NEVER.)

A balanced budget amendment isn't going to get it done it will take years to get the states to pass it.I propose that since spending must originate in the house that each department be reviewed for cuts for example the department of Education 20% cut every year for 5 years,NPR/PBS 50% cuts for 2 years.I think if we have politicians who actually will put their balls on the table we can defund big government in a hurry.I would also tell the democrats and rinos that if we really, really need revenue that badly it's time to start taxing the so called poor,it's theft when only 45% of the population are paying all the taxes pulling the other 55% in the free loader wagon.

santorum is not a conservative... and his own words prove that. He only attacked Bachmann because it got him in the news cycle... and that is about the only thing that ever would. He and michael steele are good friends... and they co hosted Bill Bennett's Morning in America Radio show. They both said (after obama won) that the “Era of Reagan is indeed over”... that “he electorate had moved in a more progressive direction... that the party must embrace more diversity with an open tent and move closer to the position of the electorate”.

That is in no way a Conservative thought or wordage. I am not a big Bachmann supporter but this is just total BS. santorum is a phony and this attack is as phony as he himself is.

And what exactly does he mean when he says she’s playing politics? I would assume most of the grass roots republicans/tea party types are against raising the debt ceiling. How is supporting their position playing politics?

” Anyone besides me notice how the republican so easily attack the girls but never a harsh word for Mitt. Ricky, Timmy, Rudy, Karl, yada yada.
Something defiantly wrong with boys in this party. They are catching metrosexual disease or something. “ <<<

Let me offer up to expect more of the same, soon, thanks to the all girl, all the time, public school curriculum, with sweaty recesses long ago dumped in exchange for Ritalin meds for the boys. Feminists are after the boys and have so far won hands down. Maybe the guys are angry at the all girls promotion going on in every tier of the culture. They have taken over all the formitive institutions; the schools, the churches, and are fast working over the military.

Oops. Santorum just stepped in it.

Not really surprising. His ATU rating is atrocious.

The House pubbies need to hold the line on debt ceiling negotiations. Anything less than big cuts in discretionary spending effective immediately doesn’t do us any good fiscally. If we can get Obama to sign-off on some cuts, we can revisit entitlement reform and repealing or defunding Obamacare in 2013. If we try that now, he’ll just veto til til we kick him out of office.

You got that right. He lost to Bob Casey by 20 points. 20 points!!! He’s a holier-than-thou hypocrite RINO. Yeah, let me rush right out and vote for that guy. This debt debacle will really narrow the field of GOP contenders. I predict any type of business as usual GOP nominee will lose to Obama.

Does it seem to anybody else that there is kind of a disconnect between the leadership and the membership in the House? And tension between the Senate and the House? And a bit of a patronizing attitude by the Senators toward the House? It appears to me there just is NO party unity.

The Odumbsky originally wanted a “clean vote” on the limit. So, give him a clean NO. How much leadership would that have required?

The Repuke has to be the dumbest creature on this planet.

There just seems to be no consensus on how to counter what is obviously a naked power-grab by the executive from the legislative branch of government. Are our elected house representatives incapable of writing legislation themselves? There was a time when if a senator tried to pull off what McConnell and Coburn are trying, the Speaker would have gone nuclear on them. He would have TOLD them where the bills originate.

Santorum is right. Michele Bachmann is AWOL.

Like Obama, she's long on talk but not put forth a plan in legislation form.

I disagree with you. I have no use for a single one of these people. We need a businessman/woman and that man/woman is not Romney. I like Cain.

From my personal perspective, this consistent stand of hers against the Democrat "sin" against the people's will of Obamacare, more than ANY other candidate, puts her in the top two of GOP candidates with Tea Party backing!!!

I'm getting tickled at the rapid increase in cheap shots and even threads about them here on FR by the minute!!!

She should take all this flack as evidence she's hovering right over the target and should open the bombay doors!!!

I agree with Mark Levin, also!!!

Your candidate is not running so call off the attack dogs. Not raising the debt limit is a plan, it is telling all the different government departments you have this much to spend, get your ducks in a row.

It's not really 'cut, cap and balance,' it's 'tinker, obfuscate, borrow and spend.'

In the last election campaign, the Republicans pledged to reduce spending to pre-2008 levels. And now they're talking about balancing the budget somewhere over the rainbow?

If they actually did that NOW, there wouldn't be any need to raise the debt ceiling.

Any pledges from these people to do something to rein in this monster in the future are utterly worthless. And that goes for both legs of the socialist beast, the Dems and the GOP.
