President Obama on Friday kept up the pressure on Republicans to agree to revenue increases in a deal to raise the debt ceiling, claiming 80 percent of the public supports Democrats' demand for tax increases.
"The American people are sold," Obama said. "The problem is members of Congress are dug in ideologically."
Throughout the press conference, Obama blasted Republicans for ignoring what he said is the will of the American people by rejecting tax increases that would balance out spending cuts in a debt package.
"This is not an issue of salesmanship to the American people," Obama said. "I hope [Republicans are] not just listening to lobbyists and special interests ... I hope they're listening to the American people as well," Obama said, citing "poll after poll" showing Republican voters, as well as Democrats, believe in taking "a balanced approach" — including both increased revenues and spending cuts in a plan to cut the deficit.
Obama repeated his warning that the country is "running out of time" to avert a financial “Armageddon.”
"We should not even be this close on a deadline," Obama said. "This is something we should have accomplished earlier."

I wonder how many of this ‘80%’ ever pay taxes
There have been other polls posted here since the Ryan plan was proposed. If you have one you like you should post a link so we call all see it. .
Last year the poll questions were like :
‘Do you think taxes should be raised in a bad economy’
This year with cut proposals the questions are :
‘Which is better to cut the deficit, raise taxes on the rich, OR CUT MEDICARE???’
Those two results are like day and night. I dont want a bad surprise when this doesnt work out as we would wish.
No tax increase ever raise revenue? I hope you don't buy that. Some do and some don't. Reagan cut some taxes and he raised others. None of those taxes raised that Reagan signed raised revenue? I can prove that wrong, it depends on the tax and the timing. Now those loophole tax increases Obama proposed clearly wont raise much revenue. But they are designed to be politically popular. They were probably poll tested and is a very cynical proposal.
The State Legislature dropped the tax rate from something like 5.8% to 5.5%.
Some genius in the tax writing committee suggested a new line on the state income tax form: If you you like to pay at the old rate, check this box.
I think something like 500 people were stupid enough to do just that.

Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet “gets by” by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.

Not concerned about wrecking others’ lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

Someone’s panicking. I believe he needs the increase because he has no idea how to cut spending. He has no executive experience, and it shows.
Politicians in general and Democrats in particular do not let facts get in the way of political public statements to support their desired positions.
