U.S. needs to ditch free-market approach

President Barack Obama needs to go further than criticizing millionaires and oil companies. He needs to propose an industrial policy.

In his June 29 news conference, Obama was right to come out against tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, corporate jet owners and oil and gas companies.

What is passing as the free market is a system of giveaways to those who don't need it -- the richest Americans, corporations that relocate jobs overseas and banks that are "too big to fail," yet have failed the economy with their predatory practices.

With more than 10 million jobs lost to the recession, and the private sector sitting on cash, it is clear that the United States is on the wrong course, a course that won't be corrected with more tax cuts and deregulation. America needs a plan, and it must generate growth by selling and exporting things people will buy, rather than through credit-fueled consumption and a reliance on fossil fuels.

This is where industrial policy comes in. Industrial policy is when a government fosters the development of certain industries or sectors through loans, subsidies or other support mechanisms. The idea is that government intervention, particularly in collaboration with the private sector, can bring sustained growth that benefits the whole society.

Very close to fascism, all me need is a little racial or nationalistic fervor thrown in.

Cheers!

The Preamble to the Constitution should be rewritten to say:

We, the people of the United States, each State acting in its sovereign and independent character, in order to form a permanent federal government, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity invoking the favor and guidance of Almighty God do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

"What is passing as the free market is a system of giveaways to those who don't need it -- the richest Americans,..."

David's wrong about that, too, of course. Most of "the richest" may be social lefties, but taxing them more won't do any good. Cutting much spending, closing a few whole departments in the federal government and many local regulatory and social offices could have helped.

I think you have that backwards. Higher tax rates on overseas profits combined with lower tax rates on US profits would be an incentive to move business activity and jobs back into America. If you disagree with this statement, can you give me a valid reason why you disagree?

You have a point. I was referring to socialism, communism, Marxism and other forms of oligarchy governments.

Without “fossil fuels” we wouldn’t be exporting anything. We wouldn’t even have enough energy for our own subsistence.

Maybe this works only in Heaven?

To which, the natural response is that it’s never been tried.

You know the real reason why many people don’t like the free market system is simply because people have to work in school and educate themselves and make a reasonable effort to work hard at their jobs in a free market system. In a free market system, there are times when people also have to retrain themselves after age 30 to do a different job. (I’ve had to retrain and reeducate myself twice after age 30 to get better jobs). That is simply too much work for many people, who (like the Greeks) prefer to have easy government jobs or simply be unemployed living off welfare, housing subsides, and food stamps. If you tax people heavily for educating themselves and working and pay people not to educate themselves and work, guess what, you end up with a less educated society with more people choosing not to work.

Let's say 1rudeboy Corporation (of the U.S.) has a factory located in Germany. Congress passes a law raising taxes on income that 1rudeboy Corp. earns there. Voila! 1rudeboy Corp. creates 1rudeboy GmbH.

The factory is still there, but now it is a German factory. And the next time 1rudeboy Corp. decides to build a factory elsewhere, it will avoid the hassle and just incorporate it there (or have 1rudeboy GmbH build it).

Yeah, I understand. Another thing to consider is that Americans have considered almost any government to be too much. Whereas, other peoples who lived in reasonable countries were very used to much more social and governmental control and yet thrived. Only when it becomes destructive to humans ala Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot is it a major factor. Most people just don’t give a damn until it is too late to do anything about it.

Totalitarianism is not new but never had the tools of oppression as well developed as today. An interesting novel which gets into some of these issues is “The First Circle” by Solzhenitsyn.

That's what I was thinking. There is communism and then there is economic fascism like this. Too many people think fascists are capitalists. It allows private property but the government gets to pick and choose winners.

I will try to check out “The First Circle.” Is it still in book stores or do you have to order it?
