Justice Department Obstructing 'Fast and Furious' Gun Probe, ATF Director Says
By William Lajeunesse
The Justice Department is obstructing the congressional investigation of a U.S. law enforcement operation intended to crack down on major weapons traffickers on the Southwest border, according to the embattled leader of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Ken Melson, the acting director of the ATF, lobbed the accusation when he sneaked in for an interview with congressional investigators on July 4, two days ahead of his scheduled interview with the inspector general about the operation known as "Fast and Furious," Fox News has learned.
"If his account is accurate, then ATF leadership appears to have been effectively muzzled while the DOJ sent over false denials and buried its head in the sand," Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said in a letter Tuesday to Attorney General Eric Holder. "That approach distorted the truth and obstructed our investigation."
The Justice Department is reportedly looking to oust Melson, who has been acting ATF director since April 2009, as the agency deals with its biggest scandal in nearly two decades. Andrew Traver, who was tapped in November by President Obama to become the permanent ATF director, could be named as acting director until the Senate acts on his nomination, sources have said.

If he dies in a mysterious accident, we'll know the reason...
Methinks this is quite significant. Nothing like getting ahead of the curve. Melson may actually turn out to be one of the good guys once this is over.

remember our conversation?
Check out the link and video.
Let’s listen in on the strategy meeting in the oval office:
Carney: The president says he was not involved in this from day one.
Holder: Yeah, he knows nothing.
Jarrett: You want to rephrase that Holder?
Holder: I meant about the gun case.
ATF Director: I was advised by DOJ personnel what to do and how to do it.
Holder: Do you have me on tape er I mean, why do you believe it was me.
Carney: President says you guys must work this out amongst yourselves.
Holder: Mr President, don’t you recall your direction about planting a false notion about guns going to mexico.
Carney: President says he has no knowlege of that.
Jarrett: Listen Holder, get a grip, find some underling to pin this on, you surely were not stupid enough to call ATF directly about this plan.
Holder, Yeah I was stupid enough to do that.
Carney: The president says he has no knowledge of any of this.
Jarrett: Holder, did you ever think what job you would handle in private life...by the way...if you don’t go quietly, we will extradite you to Mexico.
ATF director: See, I was not to blame, I was following orders.
Jarrett: that did not work well at Nuremberg so don’t count on it working here too...just keep you mouth shut and take the 5th when asked about anything or you will be going to Mexico with Holder.
Carney: The president says he did not know anything about this plan, ever.
Obama: Well, its a rap, I will have a statement for the press about some personnel changes around here...get it ready for 6PM friday.
Carney: Should it begin with a statement you had no knowledge of this scheme.
Obama: What scheme, first I heard of it was five minutes ago.
Jarrett: That is how it is going to be. Tell Sharpton he is on the short list for AG.
Obama: Get out of here, I have a tee time.
>The ATF was going after an FBI informant that had already been deported? Just beautiful /s.<
No, you misunderstood. The FBI informant was the ones who wanted to buy the guns and send them to Mexico.
DEA learned of someone who wanted to buy guns and turned it over to the ATF.
“two days ahead of his scheduled interview”
Interesting. Was he afraid of something?
Perhaps, but this what the story said.
“According to sources, unbeknown to the ATF, the target of their operation was a FBI confidential informant, a fact that only became known to them in April of this year after an 18-month investigation that cost millions of dollars of tax dollars.”
“The confidential informant is a former high-level drug dealer who had been deported by the DEA. The FBI, however, recruited him as a counter-terrorism informant, providing information on potential dirty bombs or Al Qaeda suspects moving through the border region.”
Unfortunately, it may not be far from the truth!
Like I’ve said before... this 0bama cabal belongs not only out of power, but in the bottom cells of SuperMax. They are criminals and should be treated as such.
If this was the Bush Administration this would be the first thing out of every TV news anchor’s mouth every day of the week. The NYT would have 5 or 6 reporters covering every aspect of this.
I bet that Sarah Brady gets grilled about the conversation where Obama said he was working on this under the radar.
That is the key to linking him to this.
Apparently Mexican drug cartels are ‘his people’ ,too.
Exactly. The informant was working for the FBI.
ATF did not know that they were targeting an informant. Which if you know how operations work is impossible unless the FBI was breaking it’s own rules. Which they obviously were.
Which is what I said. ‘the ATF was going after an FBI informant.
>30 other ATF agents have been terminated?????
That is what Vince Cefalu said in that interview. Today it comes out that an FBI agent was actively guiding a straw buyer for the cartels and ATF knew nothing about it. DoJ is in this deep.<
Remember Obama told the anti-gun people he was working on the issue “under the radar”. I think the plan was to create chaos with all these guns going to bad guys and then use the bloodshed as a pretext for more gun control.
>Which is what I said. the ATF was going after an FBI informant.<
okay, it sounded like you believed that the ATF knew it was an FBI informant.
Read the letter - Holy COW!
