A London police officer was treated for a reportedly self-inflicted injury after two police dogs died because he allegedly left them in a police car outside a dog training centre on Sunday while the temperatures outside reached 29 C.
Training centre staff took the two dogs, a German shepherd puppy and a working Belgian malinois, to a veterinarian for emergency surgery, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said in a statement. The dogs died at the vet's office.
The officer who left the dogs in the car was later found "suffering a hand injury," a police spokesman told the BBC.
The Daily Mail reports he threw himself from a colleague's vehicle and later cut his wrists in an apparent suicide attempt.
London's police commissioner said he is "very saddened" by the dogs' deaths.
The force's professional standards section has started an inquiry, the BBC reported.

This case invovled two police dogs. All to often it involves a child.
The temperature outside reache a bit over 84 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature inside the car would have gotten a lot hotter.
Very sad, especially with the cop being devastated to attempt suicide.
Hopefully we’ll all remember this story and be mindful of the deadly weather this time of year.
Really?!?!?
The fact that this cop is that unstable does not bother you? I understand someone being distraught over the loss of a pet, but attempting suicide over it really is telling about his or her mental stability.
They do not need to be a cop, and they need some serious counseling.
Personally its not sad, its scary... a cop this unstable, a train wreck looking for a place to happen.
Here in the desert, people get arrested not only for leaving pets in cars, but even if they tie a dog outside to the bumper while away from the vehicle.
Too bad the hand injury wasn’t caused by a dog bite.
If they are so stupid as to leave a dog in a hot car, they are too stupid to be a cop.
Most K9 dedicated vehicles are especially modified to securely run with AC on ....as well as an alarm signal to the deputies radio an the department dispatcher.
That’s what we have to ensure such never happens.
If a department can afford a trained patrol or detector dog they better have such security an safety measures to protect said investment in said pup.....
Ya have to protect that pup.
I hope you lead a perfect life and never have cause to wish you made some grievous mistake.
You’re right, this guy does not seem fit to accept the responsibility and stress of being a cop. Sometimes some who enter such a profession do not find such things out until some grievous error occurs in their work.
We can still be sad for him for what has now happened. Maybe G-d will be more forgiving than you.
I’m not perfect, I’m just pointing out this cop is dangerously unstable, if he attempts suicide over the loss of a K-9.
Someone who attempts suicide is clearly unstable, but someone who attempts suicide over an incident such as this is a time bomb looking for a place to go off... especially if they are a cop, someone who is armed and placed in situations where clear thinking and a level head is a must.
How did that guy pass the psych test? The loss of the two dogs is a terrible tragedy, enough for tons of guilt and sadness, but to attempt suicide over it isn’t something a normal, mature, intelligent police officer would do.
Let’s say you’re a cop.
Let’s say you’re a cop and, through your own carelessness, you cost your partner his life.
Let’s say it happens twice.
There ya go.
Paging Chris Wallace: We’ve found your flake.
“...and later cut his wrists in an apparent suicide attempt.”
I hope this man is removed from the force...he is mentally unstable.
Agreed. Its a shame about the dogs but this guy is a basket case who should be removed from the force if he tried to kill himself over this. They are DOGS. Not people. The whole frickin world is upside down over pets. Pets are nice. They are good companions. But they are not people. This officer and everyone else needs to get a little perspective.
One word - Nimrod !!!
“Really” back at ya!
God only knows how ANY of us would feel if we inadvertantly caused such suffering. I’d like to think none of us would attempt suicide, but how the hell do you know unless you’ve actually been a party to such horror?
So most of you think the cop was unstable. Maybe so, but God only knows how ANY of us would feel if we inadvertantly caused such suffering.
Hopefully none of us would attempt suicide, but how the hell do you know unless youve actually been a party to such horror? Maybe the guy started out OK, but this travesty has put him into another realm.
People over here get counseling even if they KNOW of someone involved in something horrific. Let’s hope this cop gets some help, soon.
