California seizes 1200 illegally owned guns
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | June 17, 2011 | Don Thompson

California law enforcement agents have seized 1,200 firearms from people who cannot legally own them because of mental illness or restraining orders.

However, Attorney General Kamala Harris said Thursday that more than 34,000 handguns and nearly 1,600 assault weapons are still believed to be held statewide by people who should not have them.

Most people bought the weapons legally but were later prohibited from owning guns.

But 12 people were arrested on suspicion of illegally owning assault weapons or grenades during a six-week sweep by the state Department of Justice in April and May.

Harris said 90 percent of the people who had guns seized were barred from owning weapons because of mental illness and 10 percent because of restraining orders or convictions usually related to domestic violence.

What are they doing about the illegals that are carrying the illegal guns?

The Real story. Your blood sugar goes bad. Someone takes you to the ER. The ER Doc finds you whacked out. He puts a 51-50 hold on you to get your blood sugar back within limits. The AG wants to really show people she is doing things sees you one the list and has your gun removed. Moral, Don't give the cop or ER doc a problem and they won't visit you. Remember these are the same people that could not find three people living in a felons back yard.

I believe “mental illness” means anyone who has ever admitted to being depressed or prescribed Xanax or similar drugs. They are using this to make more and more people unable to own firearms.

That's precisely what I suspect. One of the gun-grabbing Brady Bunch projects involves lobbying state legislatures to reclassify individuals under treatment for common, minor psychiatric problems as ineligible to own firearms.

I presume this group includes convicted violent felons, whose ranks are soon to be swelled in CA.

So what will be done with the guns that were confiscated? Will we Ship them to Mexico and sell them to the drug cartels? Or just had them out to the illegals in CA?

And what qualifies as "mental illness" such that 30 thousand people had cops show up at their doors demanding their guns?

A lot are vets that unwisely asked the VA for help with PTSD.

Oh, yes, there are illegally owned guns.

They are illegally owned once they have been stolen. The thief can be a burglar, a thug, or an agent of the state.

Don’t they call all conservatives nuts anyway? They have been paving the way for this for decades.

Most people bought the weapons legally but were later prohibited from owning guns.

These were U.S. Citizens doing what they were legally allowed to do. Subsequently they were criminalized by retroactive rules drafted and put into effect by their state legislature and governor.

Any man going through a divorce will have a shyster lawyer on the other side that gets a restraining order against him.

In most cases, a restraining order causes you to forfeit your right to own firearms.

I coulda swore I heard something about ex post facto law somewhere. It must have been in one of my "bitter clinger" therapy sessions.

Too bad that whole "Constitution" thingy is out of date.

I know fellow vets who have obtained near 100 percent disability compensation. They lied on the questionnaires and got some doc to sign off on it and certify them as suffering from PTSD (not one has any combat awards..zip, zero, nada). Gamed the system and won.

Or so they think, according to this thread.
