Viewpoints: Racist cartoon of Obama forces me to leave GOP

I was one of those rare species: a black Republican, the guy willing to spit into the wind of conventional thought, who was often showcased on camera at party events to prove inclusiveness.

But as a proud black man, I can no longer be a member of the Republican Party.

Being a Republican has long been a part of my personal and professional identities, so leaving the party is a difficult and emotional decision.

In 1998, as a young man searching for what I believed were shared values, I cut ties with the Democratic Party and became a Republican. Democrats, in my view, had become unwelcoming to those holding center-right views not in lockstep with the party, and it was my belief that through hard work, the Republican Party could be utilized as a vehicle for improving our community.

For the next 13 years, I dedicated myself to growing the conservative base of the Republican Party, and in the process bound myself in emotion and deed.

...Ken Barnes is a small-business owner in Sacramento and a member of the executive committee of the California State Conference of the NAACP.

“But as a proud black man, I can no longer be a member of the Republican Party.”

Don’t let the door hit you in the...rear end.

You’ll be missed..not.

First of all, I’m fairly sure you voted for 0 in the first place (based strictly on statistics). Second, your excuse for jumping ship is frankly ridiculous. As the old saying goes, if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

Buh-bye.

Then again, maybe the demography of his district is just shifting to Democrat.

Also, the proposed re-drawn district maps just came out a few days ago. It was around then that this fellow started writing this op-ed, I trust.

I’m married to a Mexican woman, and if I hear a republican say something racist should I say “screw abortion, gay marriage, low taxes, choice of health providers, giving my money to lazy welfare recipients. I’m going to be a democrat from now on!”

As Rush would say, “You’re a seminar caller.”

I’m a good loyal Republican, but . . . . (fill in the blank).

It always comes after the “, but”

Not buying it, Ken. The value systems are at polar opposites. If you leave over this, then you were not a serious values guy to begin with. Just a stray off the plantation until the libs reeled you back.

Go take a look at an inner city or two then get back with us about how great the Democrats have been over the decades.

Those were pretty bad but she wasn’t the prez, whom were are all expected to respect because of the “office.”

Whether the person targetted in a racist cartoon is President, Sec of State or the woman who cleans the windows, such behavior is not acceptable.

Am I a racist if I see Chad Henne throw a perfect pass to Ricky Williams and then jump all over Ricky’s case for bobbling then dropping a sure touchdown pass? I guess that’d be me.

Good comment over there...

“...we Republicans live in Dr. King’s world... Obama-chimp is not racist - it just means he’s stupid, as did the Bush-chimp image.”

Smells like a seminar caller letter to me, too. One cartoon made you chuck one way of thinking and do a 180? Must have been deep and well-thought out beliefs/ not.

Speaking for myself only... If anyone were to say that a person with even two drops of Smurfish ancestry — or maybe just a passport stamp from Smurfland — were in any way related to leprechauns, then I would become very, very angry, and would cancel any political and commercial dealings, including party membership, magazine subscriptions and trash pickup, with organizations and people in the same city as the Smurf hate-monger. And if the area were not a city, but unincorporated, then the WHOLE zipcode, plus the immediately adjoining zipcodes, would feel my wrath.

I take such matters that seriously. Really, all citizens of the Smurf-bias-contaminated region would NEED to suffer. It would be good for them. I will NOT be accused to having any kinship leprechauns, real or imagined. Believe that fact deeply, with unrestrained and heartfelt conviction, or suffer inevitable pain. Really.

We (conservatives, republicans) are going to be in serious trouble if we lose the support of the NAACP.
