WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama will announce new steps Monday to reduce government waste, arguing that inefficiency, fraud and abuse are especially troubling during tough economic times.

Obama was to sign an executive order creating the Campaign to Cut Government Waste. According to a draft of the order obtained by The Associated Press, Obama will call for a new oversight board to work with federal agencies to cut back on waste and improve their performance. The order also requires cabinet secretaries to hold regular meetings with Vice President Joe Biden to report progress.

The only way to root out fraud, corruption, and inefficiencies is Gov’t is to limit the scope of the Gov’t power and size. Fraud, corruption, and inefficiencies are the very nature of centralized Gov’t. It used to be that anyone who had taken a basic American gov’t or history class understood this truth.

listen stooopid, start with a 25% cut across the board and problem solved without spending a penny

So you're going to cut every Social Security check to every recipient by 25%?

You're going to cut every soldier, sailor, marine’s paycheck by 25%? Or are you just planning to fire 25% of them?

Many government buildings and offices are rented. You plan to just tell the landlord, “I just unilaterally cut your monthly rent for the space by 25%, screw you.”? Everybody who does busines with the Federal government just got screwed out of 25% of what they expected to get paid, eh?

“Obama was to sign an executive order creating the Campaign to Cut Government Waste...Obama will call for a new oversight board to work with federal agencies to cut back on waste...”

And the “new oversight board” will wind up costing more than the “waste” that the board cuts.

Cutting 25% does not need the reduction of people’s salaries, it would need the reduction of 25% of agency spending, and perhaps a 25% reduction in personnel.

“So you’re going to cut every Social Security check to every recipient by 25%?”

No, but I would cut the social security administrations operating budget by 25%, minus payroll.

Could cut every operating budget by 25% minus payroll. Could have every government employee kick in another 1-2% for retirement and medical.

Could take redundant departments, consolidate them, keep the people on payroll, but cut the operating budgets by 25%. Jobs that are replicated can be cut by attrition and early retirement.

Can review all government contracts valued at over $1,000,000 and renegotiate based on usefulness of the contract. In other words, the original purpose of the contract has been fulfilled, but. someone is still getting paid.

Actually, we can have all these contracts, minus ones for national security, put online and the people can determine what should be cut. This also includes all the operating budgets.

It is obvious the government cannot do this on their own. Give accounting majors 3 college credits for doing the audit.

If wikileaks can put thousands of pages of national security material on the Internet with nary a peep by the administration, our national budget, which is owned by the people can be put online.

And I thought this was Issa’s job.

25% was an arbitrary number and you leave it to the individual departments where to make the reductions

i would redline the military budget but it's prolly not possible

i still say if you make X% cuts even overall it's still better than creating ANOTHER layer of government bureaucracy that will a)never achieve it's intended mission/namesake and b)will cost more EVERY YEAR from now to eternity!!!

If he wants to cut some government waste, he should appoint ‘chainsaw’ Jack Welsh, former CEO of GE as cost cutting czar.

Whatever happened to the reorganization of Government he proposed in his last State of the Union — where he suggested he’d eliminate parts of our current Government structure where there was duplication of oversight/responsibility???

This is the best the Democrats can do? At least with Nero, you got a little music while everything was falling apart. With Obama, all you get is blather blather blather. And let’s not forget our old friends Pelosi and Reid. This is a Democrat debacle, not just an Obama debacle. If things don’t pick up, they’ll throw him under the bus and come up with a new and improved candidate. This ugly little brat (the economy) is a Democrat baby.

Cutting 25% does not need the reduction of people’s salaries,...

So you're going to cut 25% of the program, but keep 100% of the bureaucrats that run the program?

...it would need the reduction of 25% of agency spending, and perhaps a 25% reduction in personnel.

2) A 25% reduction in personnel is a 100% reduction for the personnel you fire. They'll be real pleased with you, won't they? So which is better, cutting everybody’s pay by 25% or firing 25%?

Don't kid yourself. You have to cut the bureaucracy hard to cut spending if you're looking to cut spending by 25%, and if you're cutting the bureaucracy will fight tooth and nail. I think a lot of the big mouths posting around here think it will be easy - I guarantee they will be disappointed.

Can review all government contracts valued at over $1,000,000...

The bureaucracy will never again sign a contract for more than $999,999.

As for the rest of you comments, maybe that will get as much as 10% savings. Maybe. So what are you going to do to get the other 15%?

If this was easy it would already have been done.

I agree that this announcement is just the Obamanation’s b___s___. I don't expect the Obamanation to actually do anything, the bureaucracy is his friend.

But don't expect some simple thing like a 25% cut to work when Palin is President either. Expect screaming and howling and wailing and gnashing of teeth. Expect the Wisconsin State Capitol Building times 100. Maybe times 300-400. Expect the bureaucracy to fight to the last man in the last trench. Do the American people have the stones to say to the bureaucrats “NO!”? The American people might even reelect the Obamanation just because they don't have the guts for the fight.

i meant it only in the sense of a response to 0bama that it's better to do an across the board cut than add more government

i trust Palin if she get's in will have a real plan to get us out of this mess...
