‘Tanks and Helicopters’ Mow Down Syria Protesters

The minority Alawite regime of Bashar Assad has brought in helicopter gunships and tanks to combat a citizens’ rebellion, according to eyewitness reports. The BBC quoted a Syrian refugee who had crossed the border into Turkey as saying that Assad’s tanks attacked a village near Jisr al-Shughour Saturday. About 120 members of Syria's security forces were killed at Jisr al-Shughour last week. The government blames local "armed gangs" but residents said the soldiers were shot by other soldiers when they refused to open fire on civilians. Jisr al-Shughour is described as resembling a ghost town after residents fled in fear of revenge by Assad's forces.

AFP quoted Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, as saying that helicopters flying over Maaret al-Numan, near Jisr al-Shughour, had fired on a police station which protesters had seized.

Activists reported that helicopter gunships had been used fire at crowds for the first time on Friday. At least 30 people were reported dead in Friday’s violence, three of them in the capital Damascus.

I heard a news report that Assads troups appeared to be applying scorched earth tactics around the city—blowing up homes in surrounding villages and destroying orchards and crops. For some reason Turkey is making it hard to interview the refugees—perhaps their presidential election this weekend.

Meanwhile the fight goes on in Libya. Berbers in mountain towns to the south of Tripoli have apparently thrown govt. troups out, control at least one border crossing into Tunisia, and now are attacking outside Zawiya. This city tried to rebel months ago, but was retaken after a week of fighting. It is a major oil hub on the west side of Tripoli between it and the Tunisian border. Two groups of reporters being transported several hours apart between Tripoli and Tunisia report they were forced to detour off the main highway because of apparent fighting. On C-Span last week a former reporter who spent a few years in Lebanon was talking about Hezbollah and the Syrian influence in Lebanon. He said when the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003 Lebanon was under the control of Syrian government forces and Hezbollah which Syria sponsored. He said Assad got hold of Time magazine writer Joe Klein and asked him to relay a message to George Bush. Assad said he “was not Saddam Hussein” and wanted to cooperate with the U.S. The U.S. reply was for Assad to remove his forces from Lebanon and Assad agreed. The Syrian presence in Lebanon was mostly unpopular with the Lebanese, The Syrians began their withdrawal in 2005 amid an uprising against them.

Former Secretary of State James Baker, considered to represent rich Saudis, talked during this period of “flipping Syria”—inducing Assad into splitting from Iran and moving into the U.S. camp. One model was Egypt's severance from the Soviets—who Saddat suspect would eventually kill him—and allying itself with the U.S.

Around the time Assad began leaving Syria Qaddafi was cutting his own deal with the U.S. which include ending his WMD programs, renouncing terrorism, and allowing American oil companies access to Libyan oil fields. Like Assad, Qaddafi said he feared ending up in a U.S. military prison like Saddam Hussein.

The U.S. could have fully exploited its new and fearsome power in the region had not Congressional Democrats, the news media and the full spectrum of the American Left erupted into a twisted and relentless propaganda war on Bush, his policy makers and coalition operations in Iraq.

Thanks gleeaikin. Libya’s going the way of Afghanistan, imho, but with international assistance; it’ll wind up in at least two pieces, with a cease-fire between the entities, and with each one claiming the entire pos desert they call home.

What can we say about the character of Esau? Well this much we know. He scorns his spiritual inheritance and blessings. A profane man, he lives by the sword or by force of arms. Does he put his trust in guns and military armaments first and foremost? Esau was always inclined to be violent and wrathful. He has little patience for those whose proclivities tend toward nurturing and cultivating (as of the flocks). He scorns nurturing considering it evidence of weakness. He is not inclined towards cultivating crops or shepherding as his brother Jacob is. He prefers to hunt and to get his food by taking it down as hunters do. Esau may well be the stereotypical hustler, predator and “bad guy”.

Esau is forever at war among himself. Arabs cant live together, any prophesied Third Caliphate is likely doomed. Unless a new Saladin arises like Imam Hussein, there will be no Caliphate

While, we are watching all the stories about the Arab Spring Imam Hussein is quietly bringing in thousands of trained Arab foreign fighters into the USA. We must expose Hussein’s treasonous Executive Order, which puts thousands of terrorist triggermen inside the USA. Without FBI background checks, or proper investigations the jails are being emptied across the Arab world. The supposed gun show ‘loophole’ won’t close until these people are fully armed.

At present, per yesterday’s Yisrael Hayom, quoting numerous Arab journalistic sources, it looks like either the Revolutionary Guard of Iran or Hizbollah, or both, are being used within Syria to suppress the demonstrations. Witnesses say that they were shot at by bearded men in uniform, and the Syrian armed forces are all clean-shaven, using weapons that are not issued to Syrian regulars. Apparently, Assad has had a few too many mutinies among his own troops.
