JERSEY CITY, NJ (PIX11)— Guns that may have taken lives before being seized by the NYPD will now provide the raw metal shaped into an angel of peace, Ray Kelly announced Tuesday.
The police department will be handing over more than 800 illicit weapons to artist Lin Evola, who will shape the New York Peace Angel, a statue that will be placed at One Police Plaza.
The announcement was made Tuesday at a press conference held at the Sims Metal Management recycling facility in Jersey City, where the weapons will be shredded and melted.
Artist Lin Evola addressed the assembled officers and press members, saying that her peace angels stand "to provoke and insist that we remember who we are, the grace of God that we have within ourselves."
Evola held up a small peace angel to the crowd, saying, "This is a peace angel, this peace angel is made of about 10 to15 lives, it's made of nuclear missile casings and it's made of guns from the streets."

I’m in Tallahassee with several colleges and Federal, State, County and City government workers, it’s pretty liberal here. The other day I was stuck in line behind a Subaru station wagon. Subaru’s come from the factory with “Save the whales” and “Coexist” bumper stickers. The one that made me want to pull her over and explain history said, “You cannot plan for peace while you prepare for war!”
