The Hidden Cost of Ethanol Subsidies
Pajamas Media ^ | 6/10/2011 | Patrick Richardson

By mandating 40% of our corn crop be dedicated to ethanol, we've created domestic shortages that may turn the U.S. into a net importer of corn and destroy our dominance in one more area of the world economy.

[...]

We are now reaping the unintended consequences of those decisions. Accepting as fact that American farmers are the most productive in the world, and also accepting as fact that the agriculture sector is one of the few sectors of the economy which is performing well, we’re still faced with a problem.

Coming off the third-highest corn harvest in U.S. history in 2010, the carryover (unsold corn still in the elevators) is a bare two weeks’ worth of grain at current and projected usage rates.

This is precariously low, the lowest in modern history. The only time the carryover was lower was in the 1930s — during the height of the Dust Bowl. [Emphasis in original]

This is where trade deficits come from, my friends. Not from slothful, spendthrift citizens or greedy, traitorous corporations, but from government regulations that distort the free market. At some point, no doubt, the protectionists among us will call for tariffs on foreign corn -- just to make the pain really hurt.

The Missouri Valley, from Montana to the Mississippi, is experiencing ongoing flooding. A lot of bottom land will have a late crop, if any. Other grain crops will be affected by the weather as well, and the outlook for them isn’t particularly rosy, either.

Ohio farmers are also way behind in planting. Very, very wet Spring. Wettest on record.

Of course, Obozo made a lot of sense when he denied deep water drilling for oil and some environmental whackos want to save the West Texas lizard and shut down all the wells there. And of course, the Sierra Club has blocked drilling in ANWAR, an area the size of South Caroline with a drill site the size of the LA airport. Yep...lot’s of really bright decisions being made by this administration to combat the highest energy prices in the history of the US. But then, Obozo did get to do his stand-up comedy routine with the guy and his 10 kids...and he did it without a teleprompter! Face it, folks, this guy doesn't have a clue...

Leave it up to our politicians to come up with stupid ideas like subsidized ethanol and burning up our food supply. Instead we should be drilling for oil and gas like crazy where ever we can find it and at the same time pull out all stops on research and development for alternate and inexpensive sources of fuel.

The only way for a nation to prosper and grow is when it has a plentiful supply of inexpensive energy. It certainly doesn’t take rocket science to figure out that the opposite holds true if we don’t. Unfortunately most politicians, especially liberals, are more interested on how to get one up on the opposition instead of doing what would benefit this country.
