Lawmakers Pushing Bill That Could Land YouTube Lip-Synch Artists Behind Bars (Now???)

Record labels are clamoring for a chance to have their artist lip-synch alongside 16-year-old YouTube sensation Keenan Cahill in, of all places, his bedroom.
But could a proposed amendment to the federal copyright infringement law potentially land Cahill, or any person lip-synching copyrighted material in a YouTube video, behind bars?
Senate Bill 978, a bipartisan measure introduced last month by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Sen. Christopher Coons (D-Del.), is backed by supporters who say it closes glaring loopholes in current copyright infringement law created by the realities of the digital age.
As technology rapidly evolves, our laws must be updated to protect creativity and innovation, said a statement by Cornyn.
But critics say a section of the bill provides for steep penalties -- up to five years in prison -- for publicly performing copyrighted material and embedding the video to sites like YouTube.

No problem with protecting intellectual property, but, folks, you have higher priorities right now than protecting a bunch of record companies.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) Why does this man's name seem to appear on every piece of anti-freedom legislation that comes up?

“up to five years in prison — for publicly performing copyrighted material”
So basically you could not sing to stars song on the sidewalk of your front yard since that would be in public
regardless if you upload it to YouTube. I guess I just wont purchase any music anymore since I cant even sing along to it withoiut going to prison.

Youtube already disallows this. They strip copyrighted audio from videos on a regular basis. Lip sync’ed or not.

How deep into the government is the RIAA? It’s a sad state of affairs when an entertainment industry is influencing law in this country... oh wait, Hollywood already does.

When they came for the infringers, I did not protest.

It is a brave new world.
We have a very tyrannical government right now. That yoke of slavery needs to be repealed.

"How deep into the government is the RIAA?" They are in PANIC MODE!
Why you ask?
For instance; Colt Ford (Country Rapper) Has Three Gold Records (And that is in physical Sales in an era where physical sales are declining for ALL Acts) he is totally independent and didn't need the RIAA.
This is not a fluke. More and More acts are bypassing "Big Music" and using the power of the Internet to make themselves very rich while denying the "Big Music" Machine any cash whatsoever.
It used to be the RIAA provided a service now they just are leeches because they are powerless to stop the internet's affect on Music so they try and "Change the game" in their favor.
It still won't work. The RIAA is doomed.

The best part is the fact that the video was a slap at Newsweak who said the city was dying.
It cost a whole $40k to make and the money came from businesses and donations. Its a heck of a promotional video to boot.
