Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the Michigan pathologist who championed physician-assisted suicides, died early Friday after being hospitalized with kidney problems and pneumonia.
The 83-year-old Kevorkian, who said he helped some 130 people end their lives from 1990 to 1999, died about 2:30 a.m. at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., close friend and attorney Mayer Morganroth said.
An official cause of death had not been determined, but Nurses at the hospital played recordings of classical music by composer Johann Sebastian Bach for Kevorkian before he died, Morganroth said.
Kevorkian was freed in June 2007 after serving eight years of a 10- to 25-year sentence for second-degree murder. His lawyers had said he suffered from hepatitis C, diabetes and other problems, and he had promised in affidavits that he would not assist in a suicide if he was released.
In 2008, he ran for Congress as an independent, receiving just 2.7 percent of the vote in the suburban Detroit district. He said his experience showed the party system was "corrupt" and "has to be completely overhauled from the bottom up."
His life story became the subject of the 2010 HBO movie, "You Don't Know Jack," which earned actor Al Pacino Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for his portrayal of Kevorkian. Pacino paid tribute to Kevorkian during his Emmy acceptance speech and recognized the world-famous former doctor, who sat smiling in the audience.
Pacino said during the speech that it was a pleasure to "try to portray someone as brilliant and interesting and unique" as Kevorkian and a "pleasure to know him."

Anybody there to “assist” him?
From what I understand, he didn’t ask for a DNR order, what a hypocrite.
Not to be cold... but he’s finally an expert in his field.
He was obsessed with death, which is really the origin of his nick-name, not because of the assisted suicides he performed. He was called Dr. Death before he began using his suicide machine. He was goulsihly obsessed. He wanted to photograph people taking their last breath.
i would have assisted him in keeping him alive and making him suffer but that’s just me..

Hollywierd puke.
He may have died 'peacefully' in a hospital bed but legions of devils were waiting for him on the other side and he WILL be judged for the many murders he committed in name of assisted suicide.
Mixed?
Why?
Don’t know whether it’s true or not, but Rush said today that Kevorkian hung on until the bitter end - meaning that he did everything he could to stay alive. Irony.
I was wondering about whether he made the staff go through a Code Blue for him. How ironic, not to mention expensive.
Jack the Dripper is off to his final reward.
I don’t know if you’re even aware it’s really common practice in the U.S. today if you call 911 for a sick elderly patient the paramedics will ask if the elderly patient has DNR or advanced medical directive. If the elderly patient has DNR he/she will be taken to the emergency and will be put to death, not in the ER but he/she will never come home. If terminally ill elderly patient with DNR is admitted in the nursing home there is so called comfort solution ready to end his/her life. It’s common practice. There are so many Jack Kevorkian out there today but they keep their mouth shut.
Meet your maker Jack!
Jack be nimble, Jack be quick........
I think I have an inkling.
Unless you’ve walked in the shoes of of anyone who is in complete despair and has no hope, I suppose some wouldn’t understand.
I don’t condone suicide, nor do I think it a selfish act as some think it is.
Well then only mixed part I had was the argument for dying with dignity, otherwise, Jack put a man to death without legal consent known as Tom Youk, and that is criminal, plus the reason why they took him out as a criminal. There is also such a document as a living will, in which you can dictate sedation. I would, however, never call him a hero, which is what I wouldn’t be surprised if the Huffington Post and others were already doing at this instant.
