Internet companies such as Amazon and Overstock are threatening to pull out of California rather than collect state sales tax on tens of millions of dollars worth of business, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The move comes after the Golden State’s Assembly passed a law expanding the tax to Internet sales for companies that have a physical presence or sister companies with offices there.
The move passed the Democrat-controlled lower house on Tuesday on a 47-16 vote. It now goes to the Senate.

One Republican voted with the majority. The rest rejected the move saying it would drive business out of California and invite lawsuits. GOP Assemblyman Shannon Grove called the move “just another tax grab.”

The state sales tax rate is currently 8.25 percent with local taxes adding as much as a further 2.5 percent.

Here in California, pretty much everything is taxed by at least three entities, state, county and local. Then there are “fees” and other gov revenue sources that are not called taxes. Yet gov at all levels still whine about not having enough money.
the teachers unions here in PA are running an absolutely hilarious radio ad trying to convince the average joe to call his State Senator and ask them to do the same here.
Everything that isn’t perishable and that I have some time to wait for delivery, I buy on Amazon. If they start having to charge sales taxes, I’ll drop them like a hot potato, period.
Why would any new company set up shop in California?
given the internet, we may eventually be buying via internet from outside the USA to avoid the confiscatory taxes.

More like, “If you tax it, they will go”.
There must be thousands of Amazon associated companies in California. If Amazon pulls the plug and moves out of California all of these little California based associated companies will lose there best source of sales and most will simply fail or move out of state.
Net result: Less taxes collected by the State of California.

Meanwhile, they’ll have 40,000 newly released prisoners wandering the streets...
You'll get hit with tariffs and they'll hold your merchandise until you pay. I ordered some things from the UK a year ago and was very careful to keep my total under the $200 threshold which seemed to be the amount over which you had to pay a tariff. The problem was the company didn't itemize the shipping form and the shipping and handling fee was added on to the value of the merchandise, and hence, I had to pay a tariff when I hadn't before. I complained to the company. I think they now have a notice on their website about this. The whole process made me very wary of buying things from overseas, as the tariff assessment seems to be rather random.
What a farce.
