Will seek weapons ban at city council meeting
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - There is no room for assault rifles in St. Petersburg, city council member Steve Kornell said. He wants the semi-automatic and automatic weapons banned.
Kornell will ask fellow city council members at a meeting this week to ban assault weapons in the city. Kornell also wants a resolution asking the state and federal government to follow suit. "I think it's an issue whose time has come," said Kornell. "I think most people get why you can't have military assault weapons."
The proposal comes after three St. Petersburg police officers have been shot dead this year, none with an assault weapon. However in 2009, eight-year-old Paris Whitehead-Hamilton was accidentally killed when her home was sprayed with more than 50 rounds from assault weapons. Police say the gunmen were after someone else in the home.
"I believe in the Constitution and this is not about taking away anybody's rights," said Kornell. "But people do not have a right to own a personal military assault weapon."
St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon agrees. "Assault rifles are meant basically to kill human beings," said Harmon. "There are no other uses for them."
Gun owners like Earl Rhodes agree with the chief, but still want to own assault weapons. "If I'm in a situation where I need to protect my family, I don't want a single shot shotgun when I can have an assault weapon to do it with," said Rhodes. Rhodes owns two SKS assault rifles.
I was just about to say, “Looks like he squats to pee.”
Would it not make more sense to ban ASSAULT???
Anyone in that city ever thought about just banning this city counselman???
“..St. Petersburg, city council member Steve Kornell said. ...”
Dumbass wants to set off CWII. Bring it, you liberal POS douchebag.
So he’s a liberal douchebag AND a Porksmoker...Gee...who’da figured it...
The gun grabber police chief Upchuck Harmon needs a civilian review board sniffing around his butt 24/7.
That’ll keep him busy and then he won’t have time to mess with the Second Amendment.

"Assault weapons" is a gun grabber term for an civilian semiautomatic rifle firing an intermediate powered round
I’ll admit. I’m not a big fan of full auto.
I fired the 50 cal guns on the side of my ship, and that was fun as hell.
But, I wasn’t paying for the bullets.
I’d just like to be able to get one someday if I’m in the mood and have the funds for it.
At this rate, though. it’s not going to happen.
(Unless someone clones Chesty and he wins the White House....)
“Googled him...open homo.”
Well, knock me over with a feather.
Since they're not military, are the jackboots such as SWAT allowed to own them in this brave new world?
I'd love to tell that assclown about the deer that get taken every year in Idaho with AKs, SKSs, M-1As, even AR-15s. Of course, that's immaterial, because the 2nd Amendment isn't about hunting. I just love telling Leftists they're wrong, then the look of red faces and bulging veins as I prove it to them.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
"But people do not have a right to own a personal military assault weapon."
When the Bill of Rights was written, a musket was a "personal military assault weapon". This boy is a punk with no knowledge of American history.
Hey Chief,
Molon Labe!
I’m just accross the bay.
You and I will both be in the ground or in rest homes before sentences are handed out for Gun Walker participants. The agents who committed the most egregious acts will be allowed to retire and disappear from public view.
I also agree with the chief. Military rifles were made to, uh, kill people.
The Chief isn’t as much making a statement about the purpose of “assault” rifles, as much as he’s agreeing with the primise that no one should own an “assault” rifle.
The citizen made it very clear. Don't muddy the waters.
I disagree - the “citizen’s” remark is not clear. The position of the Chief is that “citizens” should not own these weapons. Keep in mind who is writing the story, and what the intention of the writer is.
You are mischaracterizing Rhodes.
"If I'm in a situation where I need to protect my family, I don't want a single shot shotgun when I can have an assault weapon to do it with," said Rhodes. Rhodes owns two SKS assault rifles.
Please keep in mind who is writing the story and what the intention of the write is. The gunowner's statement is prefaced by another. You are JTS to make the link to the earlier statement when the gunowner says he should be allowed to own the guns.
