DILLSBURG, Pa. -- Asked Tuesday whether she supports the federal subsidy of ethanol, an always critical issue in the presidential nominating cycle, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin went one step further and called for the elimination of all energy subsidies.
"I think that all of our energy subsidies need to be relooked at today and eliminated," Palin told RCP during a quick stop at a coffee shop in this picturesque town tucked into the south-central Pennsylvania countryside. "And we need to make sure that we're investing and allowing our businesses to invest in reliable energy products right now that aren't going to necessitate subsidies because, bottom line, we can't afford it."

“Thats what politicians do. Doing what they say once elected...thats a whole different story.”
During the 2008 campaign, I was driving trucks. I had never heard Governor Palin speak. One of her speeches came on satellite radio, and I was listening with part of my mind while I drove.
During the speech, I became uncomfortable, but had no idea why. When I thought about it, I realized that my discomfort arose from the fact that when Governor Palin had said that she cared about main-street America, I had believed her.
I hadn’t believed anything a politician said in so long that it actually gave me cognative dissonance.
“Wait, this is a politician, and she’s not lying?”
When I was younger, I was a terrible judge of character. Just awful. The intervening decades have made me somewhat better. I pegged Clinton ten seconds into the first speech I saw on TV. Same with Obama.
My judgment is that Governor Palin is an honest, courageous person who has her head on straight. I could be wrong. Been wrong before. But I don’t think so.
I think the ‘Cuda has the fortitude to stare down domestic enemies of the constitution in both the Stupid Party and the Evil party, and that she has the inclination to do so.
If a candidate doesnt drive the leftards into a slavering, convulsing, howling, puking, chewing-their-own-lips-off, full-blown Exorcist seizure, that candidate is not morally fit for office.
Sarah Palin is the *only* accceptable candidate in the field today. (And this is from someone who not only thinks that women should generally be barred from public office, but that the 19th Amendment should be repealed.)
And paying record taxes. The oil industry makes less per dollar of sales than the average manufacturing industry.
Regardless, the government should stop all subsidies to them as well as everyone else and get out of the economics business, including ridiculous taxes and surcharges.
Let the market take care of itself. It’ll work out if it’s left alone.
What do you consider a subsidy to the oil company? I think it is bizzare that conservatives will parrot the democrat talking points without bothering to understand them.
For example, one of the recent topics of so called subsidies was the Sec. 199: Domestic Manufacturers Deduction. This is a 9% tax deduction applied to ALL US manufacturing, except oil/gas companies. They are limited to 6% deduction.
So are you in favor of ending all domestic manufacturing tax deductions? Or just the reduced one for oil & gas?
Stop promoting the liberals agenda by claiming normal US industry tax deductions are subsidies, even if they are smaller than the other industries claim.
Paying companies to use ethanol in gasoline is certainly a direct subsidy. And mandating that use is another subsidy.
Good for you
Uh, did we forget "Read my lips, no new taxes."
Great post, I had the same experience. And I found the same reality check:
If a candidate doesnt drive the leftards into a slavering, convulsing, howling, puking, chewing-their-own-lips-off, full-blown Exorcist seizure, that candidate is not morally fit for office.
I said the ethanol had a third less energy gallon for gallon and gas prices had doubled since this president took office.
Pawlenty said, "We can't afford these subsidies. We should let the market operate."
Sarah calls out Obama for subsidizing Soros' Brazil oil venture.
Obama is going down. Expect the wailing of winged monkeys to be earsplitting.
LOL! Ethanol is for DRINKING, not auto fuel!
Prove to me where I said that.
Back to my first question then. What subsidies are you talking about?
My stance is there are no subsidies, only tax deduction similar, if not less, than those used by all business.
You said subsidies. What are the subsidies you want to stop?
That’s two excellent posts in a row. I feel exactly as you so aptly stated. She had me with the acceptance speech ;)
Don’t worry about Thackney’s provocations, the poster is just looking for an argument. Doesn’t want to recognize the fact that every business “sector” is unique and treated so by our incomprehensibly complex tax code. So comparing these differences leads nowhere in this type of forum.
Growing corn for fuel is mindbogglingly stupid. That has created corn shortages and a huge increase in costs to agriculture. We buy corn for our horses, and the price is more than 1 and a half times what it was a year ago. Think what this means to the cost of raising cattle, chickens, pigs. Has your grocery bill gone up? Of course. and does corn for fuel have any affect on the price of a barrel of oil? Absolutely not.
End all agricultural and manufacturing subsidies. End all foreign aide. End all Congressional subsidies and apply term limits. Especially end all subsidies and bailouts for the banksters.
“Oh Noes! Who will Big Corn support now?”
Who says that?
