Woman Turned Away From Hospital Because Of Bed Bugs ( Denver )
Denver Channel ^ | May 27, 2011 | Amanda Kost

An Aurora woman said she was turned away by a doctor for a pain injection because her home is infested with bed bugs.

Christine Lewis was set for a spinal injection at the Medical Center of Aurora South. She said everything was going fine until a nurse asked her about the bug bites that covered her arms.

Lewis said she was denied the injection and treatment. She said her doctor showed her the door. “He made the comment, he's like, it could be in your hair, it could be in your clothes and we can't have you bring that into our operating room,”

...

The patient is advised to have a licensed pest control company inspect and treat their home. If the home is still infested, the patient is encouraged to store a set of clothes for medical appointments in a sealed plastic bag. Those clothes should be sealed immediately after they are washed and dried on high heat.

And the doctor is correct.

I hate going to church during flu and cold season ... I always come home with something

Sort of off topic, but along the general line of medical procedure refusals, I've been told that some anesthesiologists won't give an epidural to gals who've had Tramp Stamp tats in the target area.

I can see the point, not knowing the breakdown of the ink - and that specialty's high malpractice insurance rates.

Ahh, another benefit of open borders!!

They should have run her through a tank of sheep dip.

If an infestation of bedbugs got started in a hospital it could cost a small fortune to eradicate.

I can’t believe anyone would publicly complain about this. We really have to bring back ‘shame’.

Couldn’t they just dust her with DDT?

I agree - the situation was not an emergency, and bringing bed-bugs into a large hospital could be disastrous.

A recent study showed that bed bugs can carry MRSA

Oh, don’t get me started on the PC-church forced-fake -expressions of “peace” and “love” among strangers. I do not like to shake hands with people who are constantly coughing and it puts you on the spot and makes you look anti-social when you do not. (Social-engineering at its finest).

Get back to the traditional Latin practices prior to the Kumbaya hippie era and political correctness from cultural Marxism (anti-Christian, anyways!!!!!!).

Good for the nurse and the Doc. How long before Sebelius makes it illegal for medical staff to ask about bedbug bites on the grounds of ‘invasion of privacy’?

While I share my fellow Freepers’ horror at the thought of bedbugs, the doctor should have found some way to treat the woman. What if doctors started turning away everyone with an infectious disease?

Not sure it should be considered that shameful. Bedbugs have been found in some of the best homes in this country. Lot of high class hotels have had some issues. This isn't really an issue of living in filth. Seems odd that a hospital can't treat sick people.

Her home is infested and she’s bitten up. Didn’t sound as if she was doing anything about it at the time. Besides that, if I had this unfortunate infestation I would not go complaining publicly that I wasn’t treated because of it. Who the heck wants large groups of people to know that you have a bedbug problem?

the doctor should have found some way to treat the woman. What if doctors started turning away everyone with an infectious disease?

IOW, Doctors should be forced to treat people they don't want to treat and Hospitals should be forced to treat patients they don't want to treat?????

Spoken like a true socialist PC nanny stater.

This was an ELECTIVE procedure and the woman was endangering every person in that hospital by bringing disease ridden insects into the hospital environment.

Doctors and hospitals should be free to choose who they treat and when they treat them and under what conditions they want to treat them. And if a patient wants an elective procedure and their presence in an office or a hospital might endanger other patients, they should be shown the door every time. If I am a patient in a hospital, I sure as hell don't want to share a room with a person who is infested with bed bugs.

The same socialist PC nanny staters who outlawed DDT, which would have cured this problem permanently by now, are the ones who would demand that this doctor treat this woman or lose his license to practice medicine.

And this woman found the doctor’s stand inappropriate? Somehow she has the right to infest countless others who are already sick? And others going forward from there?

If she was infested, then they should have treated her for that condition. It would have made for a nice impromptu hazmat drill. Kinda like a Karen Silkwood scrubdown scenario. /Two Dogs
