For the fourth year in a row, Louisiana State Rep. Joe Harrison's effort to push through an immigration law in the state has failed.
Harrison, a Republican, took his proposal off the table on Wednesday after facing stiff opposition from law enforcement authorities, Catholic church officials and immigration advocates.
Harrison hoped the measure would spur the federal government to end illegal immigration across the U.S. border with Mexico.
"If we're a land of laws, we should abide by those laws and enforce those laws," Harrison told the House Judiciary Committee.
He expressed concern about public health and safety problems caused by unauthorized immigrants, but he also said that undocumented workers are exploited in the U.S. marketplace.
The bill would have required police to verify the citizenship of any arrested person before they are released. It would have required certain employers -- any state entity or the recipient of a grant totaling more than $50,000 -- to verify the citizenship status of their workforce. And it would have required colleges and social service providers to verify the citizenship of all applicants.
People seeking public assistance in Louisiana would have had to verify their citizenship by executing an affidavit under penalty of perjury and have the sworn statement notarized. But the state agency providing the benefits would also have to verify the applicant's status through the Department of Homeland Security.
At the request of the Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops, Harrison removed a provision to criminalize the transportation of undocumented immigrants, which might have affected charity work. But the conference still opposed the bill, saying the church prefers comprehensive federal reform over enforcement-only state policies.
Gary Bennett, the assistant director of the Louisiana Sheriffs' Association, said it would be impossible for law enforcement officers to carry out the mandate under the bill.

Isn’t funny how citizens want immigration enforced, but the majority of law makers don’t? Funny how that works.
As a Catholic I am getting really sick of the Church pushing immigration, when their real reason is to try to fill their pews with Hispanics who are mostly Catholic.
The Church should stay out of the immigration issue.
“fox news latino?” our elite are truly sick.
Why does the Catholic Church support illegal activity and violation of sovereign borders?
“Why does the Catholic Church support illegal activity and violation of sovereign borders?”
Because deep down, there are a lot of similarities between Rome and Mecca, one of the biggest is the belief that church views supersede that of any state or citizenry.
money
I totally agree with you. It’s disgusting......
The Catholic Church doesn't. Liberal priests and bishops who have driven their former congregations away with that very liberalism, and who are desperate to fill their pews with anybody they can, DO.
Please you need to find a proctologist and get your head examined.
like most western nations Christians of all faiths have moved from the faiths of their fathers, to a lack of faith.
the Catholic Church in the US, sees the 3rd world as the last bastion for a source of pew filling warm bodies...it keeps them in ‘business’ as it were...and is not a Cabal akin to Islam in any way shape or form.
Then you need to study Catholic history. They are acting as they always have.
As me if I want to continue to support illegal alien Catholics in U.S.?????
No only "NO" but "HELL NO!"
I have studied Catholicism for my entire life....including from grades 8-10 in their schools.
not once did we claim a time and date to expect the rapture.
Tell the police to do their job, or do the unemployment line.
Tell the church to stay out of politics, or lose their state tax-exempt status.
Then, why not rein-in the liberal priests?

Sorry sir but if Lousiana is any thing like Virginia the Sheriffs are the laziest most overrated "law enforcement" in the jurisdiction. They can sit in their new Dodge Chargers which we have paid for, and pull in the speeders, but when it comes to acting on illegals, burglaries, illegal gun trading, code enforcement, etc. they just refuse to do it. Not that the judicial community isn't also in on it.
It is blatant here, and there is wide citizen agreement. They do not want to do the real work. The simple fact is it is easier (and safer) to cite, extort, and rape, a legal registered taxpaying citizen, then stand up for them, and track down the real criminals. And the former is their priority.
It is called Leftism, the perversion of government, raping the citizen rather than working for them.

When a conservative (obedient to official Church teaching) bishop replaces a liberal one, he does, c.f. the Richmond Diocese of Virginia.
From what I’ve read, when they start clarifying Church teaching, abortion is at the top of the list. Illegal immigration is further down. Hopefully they’ll get to it eventually!
Ping!
