FORT WORTH, Texas - A Fort Worth teenager is dead after police said he tried to break into a house and was shot.
The incident happened at about noon on Wednesday in the 1100 block of East Jefferson Avenue.
The homeowner said shortly after he returned home from work he heard a noise at his back window.
The man said he pulled back the blinds and saw a young man with a crow bar trying to pry the window open.
He was coming in the house. He scared me. I didnt know what else to do, he said. I put the clip in the gun and I clicked it thinking that he heard all that.
But that didnt work, he said.
When I raised the blinds he was still there, like he was still coming in. He was almost in then. I didnt know what else to do, the man said. When I raised the blinds up I shot him.
Police believe thats when 17-year-old Ernest Morris turned around and jumped over the fence. But he didnt make it far. He died behind the house from a bullet wound to the chest.
Jacqueline Morris doesnt believe her son had to die. She wants justice for him.
He was a wonderful son and Im gonna miss him, she said.
Morris said her son played football for Meadowbrook Middle School and Eastern Hills High School. But he seemed to be getting in trouble more often and ended up in an alternative school.
They said he got a ticket and go to court messin up, havin fights at school. Thats the normal thing childs do. But other than that he was a good person, she said.
She wants answers as to why the homeowner didnt do more to scare him away. She believes her son may have known the mans daughter.
I think it was the girl. To visit somebody, I think, she said. Some people like my sister, if I dont answer the door my sister and them go and knock on my window.
Tarrant County District Attorney Joe Shannon said in Texas homeowners have the right to use deadly force if there is reasonable fear of death or serious bodily injury. Self defense laws are complex, and its usually left up to a grand jury to decide whats right and wrong.
At this point the homeowner has not been arrested.
He said the incident sadly changed his life and the lives of the teenagers family.
A lot of people say, you know, youre protecting this. Youre protecting your property. But to take somebodys life, I gotta live with that for the rest of my life and I know his family has to live with it, he said.
Don’t bring a crowbar to...
yea he be comen to visit the home ownwers daughter by “tappen” on the window with a crow bar.Maybe he be wanten to bash the daugters head in with it also.
Yeah, what do they not get about that
I HATE when an article paints a teen like a toddler. Okay, he was a teen BREAKING into someone’s house. Do people assume that a teenager can’t rape someone or slit someone’s throat? Want to act like a big boy and do things like the boy boy criminals do? Fine. Then you will be treated just like a big boy. (sorry for the vent, FReepers)
Ban unregistered crow bars!
Perhaps before shooting the poor fellow the homeowner should have gotten his name and done a Google search on him ... just to see if he was really a potential burglar/rapist/arsonist/killer and not just some good-but-misguided youth.
No ma'am they don't. Although in your neighborhood, perhaps.
Some people talk because they have something to say. Other people say something because they have to talk.
“They said he got a ticket and go to court messin up, havin fights at school. Thats the normal thing childs do. But other than that he was a good person, she said. “
And this is why the kid is now room temperature.
Nice ‘support’ there mom..
“Normal” kids don’t go around fighting at school. Especially to the point that they have to be put in an ‘alternative school’ because they can’t control themselves.
ms. jacqueline morris, in my neck of the woods, your son received justice. Valuable lesson in this incident for you and mothers like you.
Simple cause-and-effect. Problem is now solved.
Stupidity is a capitol offense.......
Hmmm, no mention of the father’s opinion on his son.
He WAS a good boy! (except for when he was not)
Some people like my sister, if I dont answer the door my sister and them go and knock on my window.
with a crowbar....
Nice to start Friday with a story that has a happy ending!
Outstanding!
Never try to enter a window that a bullet is exiting through.
