Mandatory vehicle 'black-boxes' under consideration
WRGB-TV ^ | 5/26/11

The National Traffic Highway Safety Association expects to have a decision by the end of the year on whether all new vehicles will be required to have 'event data recorders' installed.

Known as 'black-boxes' the recorders collect vehicle data in the moments leading up to during, and after a crash. Unlike aircraft 'black-boxes' the vehicle data recorders do not make audio recordings.

A perfect Black Market will araise: altering or deactivating the software in the black box. They’ll probably outsource the work to India which means 65% of the time they’ll be faulty anyway.

"I assume you are not referring to Johnny Mnemonic (the novel, not movie), yes, cars from Honduras, Mexico, Canada and Belize will be in our used markets due to demand. We’ll all be driving old clunkers (hey, how many non-boxed cars were removed from the market in Carz-fur-clunkerz?)."

This is what I'm talkin' about.

Friends, avoid buying anything that you don't need. Become more self-sufficient each month, and learn to manufacture an item of necessity. Enjoy the ride.

The technology is already in place. I recently helped out installing computers for an auto mechanics class and the instructor showed us that the technology and plan is for the EPA or state you live in to easily monitor your vehicles emissions and when your check engine light goes on fine you for every day that is active. They can also deactivate your vehicle if you do not comply or pay fines. They can also monitor your mileage and charge you mileage tax.

Wow. That’s going to do a lot for the car companies. I, for one, will be running my old car into the ground, and I might try to pick up an extra used car, too.

Doesn’t that gm crap push the button stuff already do that? Talk about watching the downfall of a once proud country. I can hear the whining now..” but it tells me when to go potty”.

I’m keeping my 1992 Honda Accord alive with minimal monetary means as I understand how to fix most of the normal breaks. It has 270,000 miles on it.

>>The boxes are already in most new cars.<<

Why are Americans are proud to be highly adept at walking on their knees under the cloak of this false democracy?

Conceptually, your car could drive itself within the next 10 years.

Then, if you were in any way bad, your car could deliver you directly to the authorities.

[Wonder when they will hook up these black boxes to GPS and cellular towers. ]

That’s just crazy talk coming from the RFID implanted in your skull.

"..will run the price of vehicles even higher..."

Not really. With all the processors on board and the network among them, it only takes a few bucks worth of non-volatile memory in one of the processor modules to git 'er done. We are actually really screwed.

“Please note your “courtesy expiration light” will come on at 75,000 miles. At which time you will have 5000 miles left on your vehicle safety expiration, to return your vehicle for the required purchase of an EPA certified electric health and safety vehicle.”

But sincerely, in salt-free parts of the West, a vehicle can be running and pretty for 30 years or more with the right maintenance. Many peasants like myself can fix just about anything and build anything of necessity.

And yes, low-techs--better than those in the movie. We follow like-minded engineers (real engineers: PEs).

No, Winston Smith has found a place with Julia, where they are out of range of the microphones.

I figure my 57 BelAir is good for another 50 years. It is easier to get parts for it than some new cars, and cheaper. In a pinch, some baling wire will do.
