Of all the petty annoyances, misdemeanors and felonies of public life, there is none that Barack Obama detests more than to have his words twisted or oversimplified. It is a big part of his frustration with the media; it is a bigger part of his disdain for the talk-show wing of the Republican Party. And so it wasnt hard to imagine smoke jetting from the Presidents ears as Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, willfully misinterpreted Obamas statement about the need to renegotiate Israels borders — in Obamas presence, in the Oval Office on May 20. The President had said that a two-state solution, which Netanyahu alleges to support, should be based on the pre-1967 borders, with mutually agreed-upon land swaps that would enable Israel to incorporate the vast majority of its — dare I say — illegal settlements into its territory while giving over equal amounts of Israeli turf to the Palestinians.

The swapping of borderlands was at the heart of Bill Clintons nearly successful attempt to negotiate a peace deal in 2000. It was at the heart of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmerts nearly successful effort to negotiate peace with the Palestinians in 2008.

Hey, I have another idea. Maybe Bibi understands that Israel has national interests, and is furthering them. Explaining that to Congress, even by use of some clever statecraft and politicking, is what good executives do.
Obama thinks that flapping his lips without thinking first is the highest furthering of the American interest, and the leftist media agrees. They don't need to understand why anything happens, only to spin what happens in a way favorable to whatever Obama shot his fool mouth off over.

If you read the story in the NYT 1/23/11 that accompamies Makovsky’s map you see that he believes the stumbling block to be the settlements and that is how he arrives at land swaps.Bibi clearly stated that security and defensible borders are the main goals of any settlement.Klein’s use of Makovsky’s map totally fails to understand that those proposed borders are,in fact, even less defensible in terms of Israeli lives than those in 67.

Israel should give the Palestinians exactly NOTHING. The last time they were given anything—the Gaza Strip—they turned it into a hellhole and used it to launch attacks into Israel. No more. They get nothing until they can prove mature enough to handle being a state. That means acknowledging Israel’s right to exist, swearing off terrorism forever (and cracking down on it inside their borders), and demonstrating they can put together a functioning democratic government. Until then, they can rot.
