More Americans filed for their first week of jobless benefits last week, marking the seventh straight week in which more than 400,000 people have been added to the unemployment rolls.
In the week ended May 21, 424,000 Americans filed for their first week of unemployment benefits, the Labor Department said Thursday.
That marked an increase of 10,000 from the revised 414,000 initial claims filed the week before, and was significantly more than the 400,000 claims economists had expected for the week.

Unexpected!
Boy, that stimulus program sure is working out well, isn’t it?
That stuff never works.
it would be interesting to know how many are teachers. Schools just passed their budgets and teachers are now getting the bad news, although most won’t officially lose their jobs until August.
Too easy.
I don’t think they can file for benefits until they receive their last paycheck from their current job.
“Class, spell ‘unexpected.’”
U-N-E-X-P-E-C-T-E-D.
“Yes, very good. Now, listen and copy down this sentence:
The media is in cahoots with our government and they are all utterly worthless liars.
“Good job!”
Some of the responsible states like South Carolina dealt with this LAST YEAR when everyone saw it coming (4 teachers let go at my school + 5 days furloughed). The irresponsible ones simply kick it down the street and beg and moan when cut time finally arrives with apocalyptic predictions of 50 kids to a class.
Charlotte, for example, built a crap load of inner city schools while the populace is fleeing to the county. They’ll shut down all those new, unused schools and then wonder why they don’t have money for teachers.
That stuff never works.
It apparently worked pretty well for the thousands of tax delinquent companies that got federal money to pay back their taxes and a big bundle to boot. They are now solidly in the Marxist's camp. Which companies were denied? That is the question.
There was the weird situation 2 weeks ago when they cited a rising prediction as good news while ignoring an actual report. The media is so far in the tank for Obama that they should be called propane.
What’s gonna be even more curious is when the monthly unemployment rate is announced. I fully expect the snake oil sellers in government to tell us all that the unemployment rate has gone down again, despite 7 (or more) weeks of more than 400k new filers.
Yes, indeed; that will be Curious.
They will probably blame it on all the tornadoes.
The Obama Recovery keeps rolling along.
there was some stash of Obamabucks that held off the layoffs in our area last year - but it’s run out.
Funny how Obama found a mountain of stash to hand over to the arabs, but he’s clean out of dough for his union buddies in BIG EDUCATION. Gee - if I were a teacher I’d think twice about voting for him again! (yeah right? LOL)

so....there’s going to be a spike in the unemployment rate in august - I wonder how big it will be?
There were something like 20 teachers got axed in our little school district. Teacher job losses will be in the tens of thousands. School district staff will also be the same.
I agree it will hit in about August.
