(Reuters) - Some prominent Jewish Americans are rethinking their support for President Barack Obama's 2012 re-election bid after he effectively called on Israel to give back territory it has occupied since 1967 to Palestinians. The backlash after Obama's keynote speech on the Middle East has Democratic Party operatives scrambling to mollify the Jewish community as the president prepares to seek a second term in the White House.

Even when my parents immigrated here from Israel in 1969 they were automatically registered as Democrats, even though they have majority of the time voted Republican..Its just the way it is, you automatically think Jewish = Democrat

That's understandable. In 1969 you had some good Democrats: Scoop Jackson for one, and some very honorable (albeit liberal) Democrats, like Hubert Humphrey. It all started to go downhill with George McGovern, I think...

Yea, I’d say your comment is right on the money; “ideology first, religion second.” These folks are some of the biggest progressives in the nation and it will take a whole lot more than seeing those of their own blood being turned over to the tender mercies of Muslim fanatics to shake their faith in the worldwide communist revolution. The vast majority will stick with Obama.

I wonder if there is a break down somewhere of how urban Jews vote as compared to those who live in rural areas. To my understanding the vast majority of Jews seem to live in cities, maybe that has something to do with it. Are there any other groups that mostly live in cites that vote any different from Jews? I don’t know, just throwing it out there. Are rural living Jews more likely to be conservative/observant?

My family (Except for a few of my liberal cousins) are not political at all..they vote for whoever they believe will be good for Israel. The last Democrat my Mom voted for was Bill Clinton because she thought he would be good for Israel..she never voted Democrat again after that..when I talk to people and tell them I am Jewish they automatically think I’m a Dem, when I tell them I am not they are shocked. The Democrat party died a long time ago, when you look at them now all you see are a bunch of Socialist/Communist/Anti Israel bastards
