A new IBOPE Zogby poll shows Atlanta businessman Herman Cain vaulting into the No. 1 front-runner position among active candidates as the choice to win the GOP presidential nomination in 2012.
Cain, a longtime Pillsbury executive who later became chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, was the preferred choice of 14 percent of the likely Republican primary voters polled.
His showing placed second only to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who got 17 percent. Christie, however, has insisted repeatedly that he will not be running for president in 2012. Ron Paul placed third with 10 percent, followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who had 9 percent.
Pollster John Zogby told Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview that the sudden rise of Cain shows the degree of restlessness among GOP faithful, given their current options.
Hes not well known. Hes very plain speaking, Zogby said. But when someone enters the forum, as he did during that debate, and rises to the top, its kind of like Donald Trump, its kind of like Chris Christie: We dont like the field, this is a guy that we can believe in.
Cain was considered the winner of the recent Fox News debate held in South Carolina. His memorable applause line came when a panelist pointed out that he lacked experience holding public office. Cain pointed out that almost everyone elected to national office in Washington, D.C., had prior public service experience.

Although Cain rated just a 29 percent name recognition among Republicans,

Name recognition is clearly not driving this poll. Cain is not well known. Christie is not well known. But they’re up there on the list.
I’m not sure this is a real poll. Have an awful lot of trouble matching these results with gallups, which have the 3 well known front runners (Palin, Gingrich, Romney) up top.
I’m not surprised by Cain’s debate bump, though.
Don’t let your emotions cloud your vote or your logical choices. You might wind up with another Obama.
Have you ever taken the time to listen to Cain? His surge in the polls, is a direct result of those who recently have.
My logical choice is a real conservative who can beat Obama.
If not Mitt - McCain err... Cain!
Cain’s fans don’t understand white guilt.
That’s to their credit - but they don’t get why he can’t win.
As the nominee for POTUS? Showered with Oreo cookies wherever he goes. As VPOTUS? “See how they make the brutha sit in the back of the bus? Drivin’ Miz Sarah?”
It can’t work.
LOL! Yeah, thanks. But seriously, Christies no conservative. He would NOT make a good president.
I be interested to know where the statement come from?
Cains Fed resume bullet will go over extremely well to elite Republicans. If I’m Cain, I’d start trying to win over the Romney / Gingrich / Pawlenty / Daniels people. “The Kansas City Fed thought me elite enough to be Chairman. That’s better than Harvard Law, and a Law Instructor at U Chicago. The Fed. Chairman.” Populist types, people who would rather have less rather than more of the Fed, Cain might have trouble with.
You are so far off the grid, you will need a boat to get back on dry land.
Let me guess........Paul supporter? (Paulyp)
Cain is right in line with small government Conservatives as well as large Corporate interests. Cain's term on the Fed., was not at all what you claim. He believes in a “Fair Tax”. Abolishing the IRS, and going with a national sales tax that everybody pays. Not just the middle 40%.
You can almost smell a Paulyp. LOL!
Go Herman!!!!
If name recognition was driving this poll, Palin would be first, Gingrich 2nd, Romney 3rd.
Recent successes, perhaps a bit of “flavor of the month”, seem to be driving that particular poll.
Cain is doing well despite being mostly unknown, high name recognition is not driving Cains high poll numbers, something else is.
Cain’s role with the Fed will play better with the Elites.
Don’t want to argue the word “Populist”. Elites vs those who are not elites?
It’s not like the first thing Cain is going to do is remind tea partiers that he was the Kansas City Fed Chairman. That’s not the audience for that piece of information. The elites, though, would appreciate the kind of vetting the Fed would likely do before picking their Chairman. Most elites don’t have much in the way of problems with the Fed, either.
That’s Palin’s biggest problem, It’s true she does have the absolute highest Name Recognition of over 95%, but her Negatives are vastly higher than all the other candidates combined.
