Mothers crying over raw milk
The Washington Times ^ | May 16, 2011 | Stephen Dinan

Four weeks after the government moved to shut down Amish farmer Dan Allgyer for selling fresh, unpasteurized milk across state lines, angry moms who made up much of his customer base rallied on the Capitol’s grounds Monday to demand that Congress rein in the food police.

The moms milked a cow just across the street from the Senate and served up gallons of fresh milk, playfully daring one another to drink what, if sold across state lines, would be considered contraband product.

“The FDA really screwed up this time. They got between a mom and a farmer,” said Mark McAfee, who runs Organic Pastures Dairy Co. in Fresno, Calif., which under his state’s laws he legally sells at 400 markets, but which he cannot ship across state lines without running afoul of the Food and Drug Administration.

Raw milk has been making a comeback in recent years as consumers try to eat locally and fresh. But the FDA has been fighting back, arguing that there are big risks to drinking fresh milk and that it brings no benefits over the pasteurized version.

The most recent action to garner headlines came last month when the FDA went to court to stop Mr. Allgyer, the Amish farmer who runs Rainbow Acres Farm in Kinzer, Pa., from selling his raw milk to an eager customer base in the Washington region.

The FDA and the Justice Department sought a court injunction after FDA agents conducted a one-year sting operation, complete with fake aliases and lab testing, to determine that the milk they surreptitiously obtained from Mr. Allgyer was, in fact, unpasteurized.

Mr. Allgyer was not at Monday’s rally, but his defenders were infuriated that he had been targeted, and said it shows a government out of control.

Oh that evil raw milk is such a bad health hazard. That's why almost everybody died from drinking raw milk before pasteurization was invented. /s

Heavily armed murderous drug cartel cutthroats cross the US border at will, and US Marshalls are busy chasing Amish dairy farmers at 4 AM for selling milk to customers in Maryland...

Tell me we don't have a cancer of a gubmint on our hands.

Don’t forget the legislators that want to tax little Johnny for being overweight.

My brother gave me some to try. Tasted pretty good to me.

his customer base rallied on the Capitol’s grounds Monday to demand that Congress rein in the food police.

I believe this is the real issue. For some reason, control freaks are not happy unless they are telling somebody how to live. Actually, the problem isn't that they offer advice, it's that they insist on forcing their way of life on others.

They need to get lost.

It’s always going to be properly labeled. Let people drink raw milk if they wish! SHEESH, the nanny state sucks.

I am assuming you meant you tasted raw milk and not breast milk? Either way, what did it taste like?

fresh dairy, an oxymoron. fresh: raw, uncooked.

quite frankly, I donot get what the problem is. Homogenized milk is equivilent of elmers glue and not digestible.

I am with you! I mean, label it - heck, use the "dead people pictures", etc... that they want to use on cigarettes and then let people choose!

I grew up working summers on my uncle's dairy farm! Fresh milk every single day! Fresh butter and cheese as well! If it were available, I would buy it all day!!

I bought and drank raw milk in college. The cream off the top was phenomenal in coffee. My mom, who grew up on a dairy farm, freaked when I told her. It's extremely rare these days but there are some nasty bugs in milk. But I believe it is my choice.

So a woman can kill her unborn baby but can't buy the baby she let live raw milk.

Thsi gubment needs to go.

I would be careful about drinking raw milk from sources I don’t know or trust. But there’s nothing better or healthier for you than raw milk if you can trust the source.

I would imagine that most Amish farmers can be trusted to know how to do this sort of thing. I just wouldn’t trust a big factory farm I didn’t know, in some other state. But I trust my neighbors here in Vermont, or the local farmers.

In the early 1900's, some doctors son died from contaminated milk. There was cow poop allowed to pile up and the cows were in dirty stalls. It contaminated the cans for milk. This doctor started a campaign to boil all milk so no more children would die. That wasn't the answer and I understand his grief. What they needed to do was make sure milk came from clean dairy's.

I like sushi as well. My brother was after me to try it for a while, gave in and liked it. Although he thought it was funny to try a hefty of the green stuff. I'll get him back.

It's extremely rare these days but there are some nasty bugs in milk. But I believe it is my choice.

Oh well. From what I understand, virtually everything you buy has insect parts in it. Might as well contemplate how bacteria is everywhere. It is your choice.

So a woman can kill her unborn baby but can't buy the baby she let live raw milk.

Americans tend to think that God blesses us unconditionally. I think we are long overdue for that smack down which is coming.

Raw milk in Maryland for Marylanders = good. Raw milk from outside of Maryland = bad.

I have to wonder just how many people even know what it means to “pasteurize” milk.

All you’re doing is killing the bacteria.

All the cream is still there, all the taste is still there.

The bacteria in raw milk doesn’t come from inside the cow.

Nope. You're killing the milk. That's why they have to add vitamins. They destroyed it by boiling it. And some that are milk intolerant can drink real milk.
