Four weeks after the government moved to shut down Amish farmer Dan Allgyer for selling fresh, unpasteurized milk across state lines, angry moms who made up much of his customer base rallied on the Capitols grounds Monday to demand that Congress rein in the food police.
The moms milked a cow just across the street from the Senate and served up gallons of fresh milk, playfully daring one another to drink what, if sold across state lines, would be considered contraband product.
The FDA really screwed up this time. They got between a mom and a farmer, said Mark McAfee, who runs Organic Pastures Dairy Co. in Fresno, Calif., which under his states laws he legally sells at 400 markets, but which he cannot ship across state lines without running afoul of the Food and Drug Administration.
Raw milk has been making a comeback in recent years as consumers try to eat locally and fresh. But the FDA has been fighting back, arguing that there are big risks to drinking fresh milk and that it brings no benefits over the pasteurized version.
The most recent action to garner headlines came last month when the FDA went to court to stop Mr. Allgyer, the Amish farmer who runs Rainbow Acres Farm in Kinzer, Pa., from selling his raw milk to an eager customer base in the Washington region.
The FDA and the Justice Department sought a court injunction after FDA agents conducted a one-year sting operation, complete with fake aliases and lab testing, to determine that the milk they surreptitiously obtained from Mr. Allgyer was, in fact, unpasteurized.
Mr. Allgyer was not at Mondays rally, but his defenders were infuriated that he had been targeted, and said it shows a government out of control.

This may be the first time on FR that the accused really is Amish!
Jeezus Christ, is there no end to what liberals will prohibit in this state???
You are wrong. Do some research. I suggest that you start with a highly respected source such as mercola.com
Yes, raw milk could be a problem if not properly handled. In fact, I just read an interesting article on Borden’s being the first to have strict requirements for their farmers to keep things clean in order to cut down on problems.
But people should be able to decide for themselves if they want to take the chance. When I was first married I could buy raw milk in Colorado. I can’t buy in here in FL (I am interested in making cheese). Apparently you can buy in from certified small dairies here “for pet use”.
We used to get milk from a farmer down the road when I was a kid. The only problem we ever had was once when she (the cow) ate something odd and the milk had a weird taste. Otherwise, it was wonderful. BTW you can skim the cream off and make butter with it in your blender.
Oooohhh, scary raw milk. Our government gone to far for to long, this is just plan nuts.
On the contrary. Raw milk, like certain kinds of yogurt, contains BENEFICIAL BACTERIA.
The human digestive system requires bacteria to digest food. And if you consume beneficial bacteria, that helps to crowd out dangerous bacteria and prevent them from giving you stomach bugs, etc.
Acidophilus is the most familiar of these beneficial bacteria.
I'm not sure it is sold across state lines though.
It does not taste like chicken and I have had both, just stay away from the mares milk.
Duh, you get the same results drinking butter milk.
Wild onions!!!!
We get raw milk all the time — from a clean, tested & certified local farm. Due to lactose intolerance, I can’t drink pasteurized milk in any quantity, but raw milk gives me no problem at all. It does taste different — fresher, richer and sweeter.
Maybe, I can’t remember, that was over 40 years ago. I only remember the milk was pretty off!
obviously you have to be more careful with raw milk. but, think about this, the homogenized milk can be dirty....so we are drinking milk with poo in it, or bacteria, it is still the dirty milk, just dead poo and bacteria.
One thing I didn’t care for was goat milk.
>> the government moved to shut down Amish farmer Dan Allgyer for selling fresh, unpasteurized milk across state lines,
Can’t they just use Undocumented transportation? /s
exactly
Raw milk was a common means of spreading tuberculosis prior to pasteurization.
Believe me, there is some bureaucrat at the FDA who has considered ways to regulate it.
Yup. And raw milk has 6 to 9% butter fat. “Whole” milk from a store has only 3 and a half percent. They kill it and claim it’s safer. The cows are pumped full of drugs too. *sigh*
My mother took me to milk cows from the time I could crawl, she would squirt milk in my mouth, I think she would miss every now and then on purpose. Believe me it was wild onions.
