NEW YORK (AP) -- Two leading makers of lighting products are showcasing LED bulbs that are bright enough to replace energy-guzzling 100-watt light bulbs set to disappear from stores in January.
Their demonstrations at the LightFair trade show in Philadelphia this week mean that brighter LED bulbs will likely go on sale next year, but after a government ban takes effect.

Wrong.
Would the store have to be evacuated & Hazmat called.
Oh, I also need a 3 or 5 gallon flush toilet. Where do I get one of those "illegally".
They can stick 'em where the lightbulb don't shine.
Agreed.
The real problem is that most people don't know what a "watt" is, and wouldn't know one from a hole in the ground -- it's just a word to them. All they know is: "It's as bright as a 100-watt incandescent bulb would be".
Ignorance is really annoying (to me as an engineer), but comprehensible in this circumstance. After all, how many people who compare engines' displacement (in cubic inches or cubic centimeters or liters) actually know how big that volume is, or even what "displacement" is, for that matter? If you tell them, "Well it's the square of the bore, times the stroke length, times the number of cylinders, times pi over 4", they glaze over. Instead you say, "It's about like that 351 engine that Joe has in his pickup", they understand that, even though they have no idea what 351cu-in looks like.
*sigh*
That technology appeared interesting as well.
But, would it have the same eerie light effect that the CFL’s do?
Same functional premise - the electrons emitted cause a coating in the inside of the glass to glow.
If/when these are as good as promised (and I’m eager to have LEDs for landscape lighting - malibu and MR-16 projectors - that is on for a lot of hours every day) market demand will take care of things, not bans.
But you know that greenie socialists will pretend that their bans caused this to be developed.
I replaced one hard-to-get-at bulb at my parent's house with an LED bulb some time ago. So far, it's working great. I'm not expecting to need to replace it ever again. And, if the new bulb saves my Dad from teetering on top of a ladder, perched on a chair, perched on a stack of phone books, because he "doesn't want to be a bother and call me to change it" ..... then frankly I don't care what it costs.
But, I'd say that, at 20 bucks or so a pop, they're not yet ready for prime-time, quite yet. Hopefully in a few years.
Like explaining apartment buildings to people who have only ever seen mud huts...
“It’s like... a bunch of huts stacked on top of one another.”
5K volts are generated. The claims are that there are no X-Rays or EM interference generated.
Electron Stimulated Luminescence
I don't see how the light quality could be 'better' than CFLs, since both use phosphor stimulation to generate visible light. It all depends on the phosphor mix used.
Watching the lumen output of LED flashlights grow and grow over the last few years, my money is still on an affordable LED bulb coming out one day.
Here’s the cite to the bill introduced by Senator Enzi of Wyoming.

Thanks, that’s what I figured. Will be interested to see how much EMI they emit. For all their other sins, the CFLs are reasonably clean.
odd... a quick search shows an LED bulb (60 watt replacement) for $26

looks like someone is trying to cover for their twisty, chinese made, bulbs
my point being 60 watt bulbs would be more normal home usage then 100 watt bulbs... and 60 watt bulbs have been available and don’t cost $50
Let us know what happens!
It is whiter in color temperature than we are used to from incandescents but runs COLD and is easily dimmed.
As LEDs are available in many colors, a simple mixing of colors could easily be made to reproduce the color temperature to which we have grown accustomed.
It is a testament to the corruption in the Government/Green movement that CFLs were ever offered as a lower energy solution to our current bulbs. Just one of many fronts where we are pawns in the Progressive, Green, Socialist, Marxist plot to destroy everything which made the USA more successful than any other country in the world.
“So far, it’s working great. I’m not expecting to need to replace it ever again.”
Don’t be too sure. Two years ago I bought a 5 watt LED spotlight at Walmart for my front porch. It had a large cluster of LED’s. Since LED’s are are low voltage, the light also contained electronic circuitry to to step down the power from 110 volts AC to to low voltage DC. The circuitry gradually failed within months, one LED segment at a time. So, even though the LED’s may be touted to last a long time, the power supply may not. Great Chinese product, huh?
I seem to recall that Tesla used electroluminescence for stage lighting with huge panels unconnected by wires.
That was in 1905.
