Virtually unreported by the national media - because it might detract from President Obama's victory lap...
The "Father of Waters," as President Lincoln called the Mississippi, is on a historic rampage. Almost no one now living remembers such a river crest.
The levees were blown on the Missouri side of the river, below Cairo, last Monday night. Memphis is being surrounded by water. New Orleans will not even see the river crest before Memorial Day Weekend...
Is CNN going wall-to-wall?
Nope.
...
What might this historic flood mean? Well, no one's talking, no one's predicting.
Because doing so might affect the chances of That Man in the White House to win re-election in 2012.

If not, hard cheese folks. You on you own.
Huh?
Nonsense.
I see abundant flood coverage on TV, newspaper, and internet.
Quit trying to politicize Mother Nature. We’ve had enough of that already.
ping
Chicago way.
they are confident the levees will hold (if no one tampers with them) - the seepage under the levees won't be as bad as 1973 (the crest this time will be higher) - and the sand boils are nothing to worry about
we are leaving soon - my fear is when the water begins to crest here, the roads will be closed (some are now), no trucks will be available and no storage facilities will be available
good luck to all the coonasses (and no - coonass is not an insulting word to a coonass - so don't go hypersensitive on me here)
Well, last year’s terrible flooding in Nashville was virtually ignored by the MSM, and was never mentioned by Obama.
And after Katrina, I think many of us are concerned that the MSM and liberals will try to politicize natural disasters. Though since we now have a good Democrat in the White House, the MSM efforts would naturally be to minimize coverage, and/or show a heroic compassionate Obama delivering aid to the masses.
I’ve seen a bunch of coverage too. Then again, I’m paying attention. I used to live in LA. They have already opened up the Bonnet Carre and will open the Morganza soon, I understand. If these flood control structures work, and with any luck, the damage in LA will be limited. Unlike 1927.
???It’s been all over the news.
Well, there's also the "hot missing probably murdered white lady" angle, but that doesn't apply here either.
I think this guy is right. This is a historic high in the River. There certainly has been some news reporting on it, but not nearly as much or as breathless as you would expect.
Compare this to Bush’s NOLA hurricane. In fact, I’m kind of surprised that they haven’t blamed Bush for leaving Obama with inadequate levees.
“Is it because the people mostly affected by the Great Mississippi Flood of 2011 are Republican?”
Memphis and New Orleans are not Republican. The basis of this article is nonsense.
Just checked. Looks like opening the Morganza could flood an area 20 miles wide by 100 miles long, along the Atchafalaya River. Mostly rural I think. But not without consequences.
The Memphis part of the flood was the top story on the Today show at 7A this morning.
There are a few small towns and cities in the area. The difference is that they are working class and will do what needs to be done unlike the NOLA city dwellers.
It’s kind of a double edged sword in that the flooding will be bad for personal property but it will also be beneficial in replenishing the wetlands and fertile farming regions. I’m just wondering when the Mighty Mississippi decides it’s had enough of man trying to tell it where to go and changes course again.
The reports I've heard on the flooding have been the third or forth report down and have been very brief.
Rearranged your sentence a little :^)
you are right there - we have tried to keep the river on its current course for a long time - and she is past due to find her new course - it will happen one day - the question is when
Nearly happened 30-40 years ago when they *accidentally* found it undercutting a control structure......Came very close.
