Health care costs a hefty price tag for Pentagon

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A military built for fighting wars is looking more and more like a health care entitlement program.

Costs of the program that provides health coverage to some 10 million active duty personnel, retirees, reservists and their families have jumped from $19 billion in 2001 to $53 billion in the Pentagon's latest budget request.

Desperate to cut spending in Washington's time of fiscal austerity, President Barack Obama has proposed increasing the fees for working-age retirees in the decades-old health program, known as TRICARE. After years of resisting proposed increases for the military men and women who sacrificed for a nation, budget-conscious lawmakers suddenly are poised to make them pay a bit more for their health care, though not on the president's terms.

Kenyan wants an increase of $2.50 per month for individuals, and $5 per month for families.

Obamacare although unconstitutional as of this moment, does not appear to be working.

“Free health care for life” costs more and more each year. And then you get kicked to the curb when you hit medicare age.

What was it the recruiter said to me in 1974?

Tricare IS cheap, but you get what you pay for. Hardly any physicians in my area participate. Those that do probably lose $$.

The friggin' ONLY time that the (cr)AP ever uses the phrase "entitlement program", and it's to carry the water for their boy and his agenda.

Pathetic.

For my Doc, the ratio is one “real” insurance patient to 8 tricare patients. He does it out of patriotism.

When we have cut every last unearned benefit - i.e anything for illegals, welfare, etc, then we can go after the earned ones.

Ford spends more on health care than it does for steel.

Yes Tricare is cheap. The doctor my kids see is the same one all the kids on public assistance see. The plus side is if you go early you can always get in right away as the public assistance types do not get up too early. The waiting room of the doctor I see is always loaded with medicare/Medicaid patients. Now all those old people do get up early so I usually have a wait.

No point in rehashing Obama Motors and Obamacare late on a Sunday night. Their due will come.

Ford will no doubt be the strike target for the next UAW contract. It will be ugly.

Raise the costs for veterans’ medical care.

Give free medical care to illegals.

If Washington DC burned to the ground it would be a big improvement.

I’ve got TriCare as a military retiree but my wife gets a better deal-—She works for Kaiser Permenante and gets her coverage (for life) for free!

10 years of war and an increasing amount of military and vets with injuries and PTSD...well, duh, no wonder it’s costing Tricare more.

Yep at 65 you get kicked to Medicare and Tricare, both administered out of the same agency. Then you find a lot of primary care docs dumping you. Many Military bases no longer have medical centers, like the one in Millington, the hospital was closed after it went from a training facility to a records keeping one.

Don’t get me started on the high priced Exchanges, or the Commissaries which don’t usually save the Military personnel much, beyond a few cents in taxes. $200 Vera Wang wallets...give me a break..those are Macy and Dillard’s prices.
