It was just a firehouse chat with the guys of Engine 54 in lower Manhattan. But President Barack Obama delivered a message he hopes will also hit home with every American in this week of national catharsis: "You're always going to have a president and an administration who's got your back."
In the denouement to the daring raid that brought down Osama bin Laden, the president has in effect been reintroduced to the nation.
While taking care to strike the right tone trying to savor the success of the dramatic covert operation without appearing to gloat Obama has offered himself as a decisive leader willing to take bold risks.
He's gotten a bump in the polls that isn't likely to last. But Americans may well come away with altered perceptions of a president whose strongest personal qualities in past polls have run to squishier traits like being a good communicator and friendly.
"It sheds a new light on him," says pollster Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center. "What happened here may improve impressions that he is a strong and forceful leader, and that's the enduring potential benefit."
Obama's understated victory lap not that he would ever call it that continued on Friday in Kentucky...
But it is inescapable that he is not only a president. He also is a candidate for re-election. And the successful raid can only do him good politically...

It’s virtually inevitable and Bummer is going to spin his distance from this. Again.
I will be happy to be proven wrong.
Time for the a## powdering. How they fall for his insincerity is mind boggling.
You're always going to have a president and an administration who's got your back.
Until I get re-elected in 2012.
I find Obama consistently irritating but it is difficult to blame him for the manic schoolgirl media’s reaction.
The historical understanding of this event is not going to turn out according to sappy and ridiculous Huffington/Politico/Salon journolist junk-food. As could have been predicted, they’re exulting in a stroke of good fortune, but this raid was a huge risk, things might have gone down quite differently.
Over time the enthusiasm will subside and people will naturally wonder about why this took over a year to nail down. Assuming that John Brennan/Hillary/Panetta and the rest had become *SO CERTAIN* that bin Laden himself would be relaxing at home that day (much less: lightly guarded, unarmed, in his pajamas). Of course now they say they were positive of it, victory has many fathers.
I thank Obama for giving them the nod, but the decision was hardly daring...it was glaringly obvious.
The media is giving Obama a very very very low bar, and after 16 hours he managed to hop across and reluctantly make a no-brainer decision the right way. Well congratulations! Heck, all hail the commander-in-chief for not being a complete dunce on every decision he makes...just most of them.
Barf alert was in the headline (right after AP).
They are calling Obama “gutsy” now as a way to rebrand him.
They didn’t want to mention the WIMP factor. They had not qualms about using that meme against Bush or W (remember “chicken hawks” (another subtle homosexual slur, by the way)).
Included for historical purposes.

Reminds me of John Kerry returning to Vietnam to shoot some "hero" footage for later use as a politician.
I don’t recall “celebrations in the streets of America” when Saddam Hussein was captured. The media (and astroturf activists) started campaigning for Obama’s “victory tour” the minute the news broke.
My bad! Sorry! I shouldn’t try to read and doze at the same time.
Its a good thing those SEALs in Pock-e-stan had Commander Zero along with them to ensure mission success.
Meanwhile, Hillary was out on the tarmac dodging heavy incoming while keeping the snipers at bay.
I totally agree with you. This was a no brainer and I am so sick of the gushing Yucks on MSM. According to a Fox News Poll only 2% of the audience believe giving Obama most of the credit. Military was #1, CIA #2 and Bush #3. So, we are not alone. : )
Obama didn’t do a damn thing other than play golf. Someone else made this call and it wasn’t the magic muslim.
That poll is encouraging. I guess Americans are smarter than I give them credi for. They obviously get it this time.
