CAIRO — Egypt is charting a new course in its foreign policy that has already begun shaking up the established order in the Middle East, planning to open the blockaded border with Gaza and normalizing relations with two of Israel and the West’s Islamist foes, Hamas and Iran.
Egyptian officials, emboldened by the revolution and with an eye on coming elections, say that they are moving toward policies that more accurately reflect public opinion. In the process they are seeking to reclaim the influence over the region that waned as their country became a predictable ally of Washington and the Israelis in the years since the 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

The Left did this with the Shah. He was a "bad man" and so Carter did nothing as he was ousted and replaced with Khomeini.
The Left did this with Mubarak. He was a "bad man" and so Obama did nothing as he was ousted and replaced with the current crop of people who seem to want war with Israel.
The world is full of bad people, and that is not ever going to change. We need to find the people (good or bad) who serve our interests and we need to support them. Mubarak deserved our support.
The Shah became a "bad man" in Carter's view when he refused a business deal that would have personally enriched Carter and some cronies.
After having just called him one of the United States' "greatest friends in the Middle East" he completely abandoned him to the wolves immediately after he turned down the business proposition.
Carter is a big a fraud as Obama.

Egypt is Sunni. The Muslim Brotherhood is a Sunni organization. “Everybody knows” that Sunnis and Shiites won’t cooperate. What “everybody knows” appears to be wrong.

The Islamic confederacy under formation (both Sunni & Shia - for now) united against Israel and the Western world, however, this wild horde is doomed to military defeats coupled with inter-Islamic warfare, as always.
