Reuters' Freeland: US Prisons An 'American Gulag Archipelago'

Chrystia Freeland has called the US prison system an "American Gulag Archipelago." The Global Editor-at-Large of Reuters made her comment during today's Dylan Ratigan show on MSNBC.
The context was a discussion of the recent WikiLeaks document dump about Gitmo, but Freeland was clearly speaking of the domestic US prison system, not our military prisons. Ratigan picked up on her theme, saying we could cut our prison costs in half if marijuana were legalized.

I’ll be glad to give our prisoners to any country that’ll take ‘em.
Iraq or Iran, perhaps?
If not, why not Singapore?

I guess I missed the part about why I should care what Chrystia Freeland has to say about anything, or, for that matter, why I should have the slightest idea who she is.

I agree.
Too many people are unfairly and unjustly incarcerated for non-crimes like beating a tranny within an inch of their life.

I have no problem shipping them overseas. Let the Europeans deal with them.

Gee Chrystia Freeland, our state legislatures have passed laws that forbid certain things. Our Congress has as well. Each time the drug issue is placed before the public, the public votes to continue the rules as they are.
How is that reminiscent of the Gulag Archipelago?
It bothers me a lot when folks use some disgusting practice from the past, in an attempt to legitimize their insanity today, thereby diminishing just what the Gulag and other efforts were in the process.
Here’s one more fine graduate of our education system, that can’t differentiate between ‘the Gulag’ and legitimate Western law enforcement efforts.

I lived in Spain when that nation decided it would reduce crime by legalizing the personal possession and use of marijuana (1982). The result was a crime wave.

Did they suffer from Reefer Madness, or was the crime mostly due to theft to buy weed?

That stupid leftist once again denigrates the victims of a genuine massacre and compares it to the American justice system:
Yes, this is REUTERS, THE NEWS ORGANIZATION - AN ANTI-AMERICAN LEFTIST PROPAGANDA VEHICLE.

I am reading the Gulag Archipeligo now. In the prologue to the 2nd volume it says 60+ million were killed in the Gulag between 1917 and 1956. Some millions did get out alive. MOST were sent there for no reason what so ever.

She's obviously a doper. Check her arrest record.
There's no need to pay attention to these dope damaged people. Their brains don't really work any more.

There’ll be some reason. Not part of a favored elite of some kind, you can bet on that.

From what I observed the crimes resulted from attempts to get money.
My apartment was ransacked for money and items to be fenced. A friend, walking on a beach, was assaulted, knocked unconscious, and had his wallet and keys lifted (since he lived on a military base his living quarters weren’t tossed).
So, what was the Spanish government’s response to all this? They rewrote legal statutes so that a ‘crime’ had to involve a higher amount of money than had previously been the case!
These legal revisions were from a Socialist government coming to power in Spain for the first time since Franco died.
