Vicious Beating Outside National Zoo in DC

On my way home from work tonight, I witnessed a mob of approximately 50 teens beating another teen and kicking him in the head right in the middle of 6 lanes of rush hour traffic on Connecticut Avenue just outside the National Zoo. It was terrifying. They left the victim lying in the middle of the street. He eventually stood up and was clearly dazed as he tried to walk. Eventually someone called him to the sidewalk and he managed to stumble away. Police were called but the traffic was simply too heavy for them to be able to catch up to the attackers. I doubt that this attack will be reported in the news. It was Black Family Reunion Day at the National Zoo.

OK, how many times does this need to be said: If you're going to be in public, have a camera with you to record anything you need to. They're cheap (from just under $100 to $150 will get you excellent top-of-the-line HD
Handheld camcorders), and you can either 1)forward the tape to your local station, 2) put it up on the web with circumstances as a reporter would, or 3) keep it in case of future need. And, as I saw once before, if threatened, tape openly and say that it's going to the web as you speak.

Black family reunion day at the DC Zoo is a real event, though it may not be sanctioned by the zoo itself. In past years the day has seen other episodes of punks run amuck, including I believe, at least one shooting.

Black family reunion day at the DC Zoo is a real event,Why does this remind me of that old joke about, "what is the most confusing day in Harlem?"

Tell me about it. I have a friend who lives in Mount Pleasant on one of those streets running down toward the zoo. Not. Safe. At night.
Ahhh, yes. Mount Pleasant. A bunch of my friends rented a house there in the 1990-1991 timeframe. Decided to throw a party and a good number of uninvited guests turned up. Including one guy who they found (and ran out of the house at the business end of a baseball bat) trying to sell drugs out of one of their bathrooms.
A couple of them were still there for the 1991 riots. Where Metro PD moved in and tear-gassed the entire area after the Church's Fried Chicken and 7-11 got looted. I remember watching, live on local TV, the guy busting out the 7-11 windows with nunchuks, and the footage video crew that got swept into the Church's with the looters - followed by the tear gas barrage. Didn't appreciate how the prevailing winds carried the tear gas over my neighborhood (up by National Cathedral) tho.
Good times. Good times.

It may not be published in the official calendar of events, but everyone knows about it. There is a link to a Washington Post article about the attack in one of the earlier comments.

DC and “National Zoo” is redundant.

No harm, no foul. It sounds so outrageous. Sadly, it was real. I was scared. The entire mob was running down the street toward my car. I couldn’t go anywhere because traffic was at a standstill. All I could do was lock my door and hope that the attackers kept on stepping.

They came for their day.
They are what they are.

None taken. It sounds outrageous, but sadly it’s true. I was really scared. I was literally blocked in with other cars and the mob was headed straight for my car. Thankfully the thugs just kept on steppin’. I work just a block away from the zoo. I always thought it was a fairly safe neighborhood. Not any more.

No, it is a dangerous situaiton and in DC you are not permitted to defend yourself.

He didn’t. A friggin six lane river of lemmings with a herd of jackals on the banks attacking a wounded musk ox. Not one Human with a capital H.

CNN: “The zoo was at capacity Monday, in part because of an annual Easter Monday African-American Family Celebration, a free event that draws large crowds. Because of the crowds, the zoo closed its gates to additional visitors.”
