I think the point was that this young woman had very high aspirations in life and had a lot of talent, only to have thugs try to take her life.

No...that might be the point arrived at by some readers of the piece; but the 'journalist' deliberately used 'American Idol' in the title to troll for fans of the show...I'm sure there are many other young men and women who have 'very high aspirations in life' and are brutalized daily, but they are swept under the rug because they didn't try out for 'AI'.
