Atlas Shrugged Part 1 Quick Review- 5 stars!
Very faithful to Rand's ideas. I didn't feel like they skipped any major items... the back story with Francisco was hinted at and would have been too hard to develop completely.
Casting was superb. Hank (Hooray!) and Lillian (Boo!)Rearden and Ellis Wyatt (!!!) were done perfectly as was Wesley Mouch and the other moochers and looters. Dagny was good but it took about ten minutes for me to completely buy her in the role.
Pace was perfect... it kept moving at a fast speed, and I didn't want it to end.
Cinematography very good- hard to believe only cost about $5 million! The Rearden Metal bridge was great, as was the Colorado landscape shots...
Audience Reaction: Duluth, GA 12:25pm showing was about 80% full (there was noon showing in a larger theater already going) & audience reacted with enthusiasm throughout and Applause at end.
Can't wait for Part 2! I will be going back to see Part One more than once...
Minor nitpick- shouldn't have had the date 2016 on the movie, it is timeless.
Oops! It’s Saturday now. I was in the Friday 11:40 showing.
Saw it last night in Tampa. It was in a Cinebistro theatre. Awesome movie experience. It was sold out.
I liked the movie. Can’t wait for the rest....although it’s depressing to see the parallels to today.
No. I don't like going to theaters because the noise. I have very sensitive hearing, but may have to see this one.
Wow, you must have been a prune after a whole year in the tub!
Indeed.
My wife and I were sitting one row behind that little 3 year old girl who, for reasons unknown, had zero interest in Atlas Shrugged Part 1 but nevertheless insisted on continuously holding a conversation with her mommy and daddy about something.
But even that couldn't spoil a great story.
Betty Davis would have Been good
“Once I learned the author was an atheist...I lost complete interest in this movie...”
Just out of curiosity, would you let a heart specialist who is an atheist operate on you?
Just because someone is an atheist, it doesn’t mean they are wrong about everything.
Supposedly, the Reverend Al Sharpton, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and Father Michael Pfleger are all Christians. Does that mean they are right?
“I haven’t read the book (well, I’ve tried several times but only got about 100 pages in)”
Get the book on CD or in MP3 format and try that. Especially if you are going on vacation or commute anywhere.
Libraries usually carry this in audio book format.
Having read the book almost fifty years ago while still a teenager I think the year 2016 is perfect for it. The stage seems to be set for the real life version to take place in 2016 if not sooner barring a sudden awakening of the brain dead. As for the trains they may very well be the only transportation we have in 2016 if the current madness continues.
The main thing I remember from my reading of the novel is that those who spouted absurd nonsense had taken control of the government and all else along with it while those who still conversed in the terms of sanity were ostracized, condemned, called evil or not intelligent enough to understand life. Is this not exactly what I see going on today? Even Fox news is beginning to seem like a cartoon show. We have installed a complete loser with an unknown past in the presidency, he spouts random absurdities even as the leprechaun on the “right wing” news channel defends him and we are still asked to imagine that he is super intelligent even after he has demonstrated time and again that he is anything but. Maybe the movie should have been set in 2012 rather than 2016.
I will be at the 7:20 show as well tonight. (Courtesy of WGST)
In the book, that testimony was one of the most compelling arguments against socialism that I have ever read. The part about the person (Ma Chalmers, I think) empowered with the position of giving out 'need' checks to the workers who came up with the most pathetic needs was especially evil. Yet it is what we have today with our current Congress.
Please see my post number 209.
Thanks for all the great reviews and comments. TWO theaters in my area are showing AS which I’ll catch next week.
The overnight numbers will be available here shortly...

Going to see it again with my son at Noon today!
He's the anti-George-Soros.
Bob Beckel’s brother, who is a libertarian, was on Hannity last night, he has a role.
Bracelet....$159 !!! I think I will wait for the cheap version.
I saw it at the Loews Waterfront in Homestead (near Pittsburgh) for the 3:20 showing yesterday. The place was at least 3/4 full for a mid-afternoon showing, and the sign out front had already announced sellouts of the 7:30 and 8:20 showings.
I loved it, in spite of the fully predictable efforts of the leftist movie critics to kill it in the womb (leftists are good at that). To me, the fact that it ran so closely to the book was a pleasant surprise. The actress (Taylor Schilling) playing Dagny was spot-on perfect.
I wish Ellis Wyatt had not made his pronouncement in the movie’s final line, just to keep those who have not read the book guessing as to where everyone disappeared to, but that is my only minor quibble.
Can’t wait to see the overnight numbers - I have a feeling the per-screen average is going to shock the Hollywood commies, guaranteeing a larger release despite their efforts.
FReepers - ignore the reviews and go see this movie. I know you will (ignore the reviewers), because the reason you are conservatives/libertarians is because you are still capable of thinking for yourselves. IMHO, Atlas Shrugged Part One is definitely worth your time, money and support.
Just because someone is an atheist, it doesnt mean they are wrong about everything.
It actually shows very little depth. The Creator isn't an after thought...it should be the first thought as one wakes up in the morning with...anything less is a rather surface individual that hasn't a real clue what it's all about.
The others you mentioned are just lousy, clueless frauds...that is easy to discern.
It is a shame Rand didn't acknowledge The Father in her writings since they are straight from HIM and if a person can't see that, again clueless.
