In the book, that testimony was one of the most compelling arguments against socialism that I have ever read. The part about the person (Ma Chalmers, I think) empowered with the position of giving out 'need' checks to the workers who came up with the most pathetic needs was especially evil. Yet it is what we have today with our current Congress.

I agree! Remember the old man who couldn’t buy any more records for his collection because a neighborhood girl needed work done on her teeth? To leave all that out was my only disappointment in the movie.
