In the event of a government shutdown, some 800,000 federal employees who are furloughed without pay may collect unemployment insurance.
Government workers are covered under the Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees Program, which is funded by the federal government, but administered by the states.
Generally, unemployment claims are filed in the place where you work, not where you live. The states are reimbursed by the federal government for the funds they pay out.

But they’ll veto a bill to pay the military.
Boehner better not give up the policy riders in the face of this.
Great, first time unemployment claims skyrocket and the secret on the economy is out, there is no recovery.
I believe the government holds the first check, and pays it out the last week you are laid off. If you are laid off for one week, I don’t think you receive an unemployment check, unless something changed.
I would expect them to get unemployment, the same as any other laid off worker that paid into the system.
They will have to pay back any unemployment benefits, if congress gives them back pay.
Hah! It takes 6-8 weeks to get your first check anyway. Not that gov’t workers would be aware of that since they basically have union jobs (non fire’able)
gag...
Private sector American is on their knees with the weight of millions of government employees clinging to their backs, refusing to let go...But we must be fair to the government employees!
Actually unemployment is standard practice for furloughed employees in the private sector. Plus, and it's a big plus, if you get unemployment you can't get back pay which will save a ton of money and give government employees a taste of the real world.
Furloughed private sector employees?
Ya mean it was all tenporary?? All the *millions* that were down sized in the real non-government world and lost their jobs, homes, investments and businesses are are getting their jobs and businesses back?
(((Is he joking?)))
Nancy already said it’s the greatest stimulus we could have.
Yes, we should be fair to federal employees. Some Federal employees can join unions, but they are toothless as they cannot bargain over wages, hours, conditions of employment, benefits. They are not in the same position as state and local employees. If a federal employee is laid off, he or she should get unemployment compensation under the same conditions as employees in the private sector.
Words cannot express the level of disgust I have for the EmoRats.
You gotta hear from the self employed. WE GET AND GOT NOTHING when the work stopped. Obama’s policies have TARGETed the shutdown of small businesses and we never got ONE WEEK of unemployment.
I have no hair to pull out anymore.
OK, they collect unemployment. Would they collect back pay after the furlough ends, also?
If someone is laid off temporarily without pay, they get unemployment. That’s what is happening to most Federal employees next week. Private sector or public sector, that is what happens.
Why is their receiving unemployment benefits a shocker?
“OK, they collect unemployment. Would they collect back pay after the furlough ends, also?”
Probably not. That’s what has happened in the past, but probably not this time. If they do get back pay, they have to repay the unemployment benefits they received. Same way it works with private sector workers.
Contractors who work for private companies on federal contracts (such as myself) are unable to work during the shutdown...
Thats OK, let the unionized public workers take home $190 per week for a while...
so that they will appreciate their jobs more after their $89K salary and benefits gets reduced to $86K
