But they’ll veto a bill to pay the military.

Boehner better not give up the policy riders in the face of this.

. . . . Our elected officials will continue drawing a paycheck.

Pay the Troops FIRST.

DoD Issues Shutdown Rules

With a government shutdown looming, military members and families have anxiously waited for some official word if they would see a paycheck come the 15th of April.

On Thursday, DoD finally announced its shutdown contingency plan for April 9.

The plan confirms that servicemembers and “excepted” civilian personnel will be required to report for duty, but there will be no funds to pay them until the shutdown is ended.

While visiting troops at Camp Liberty (Baghdad, Iraq), Defense Secretary Robert Gates emphasize that

service members eventually will receive their pay if the government shuts down;

however, their mid-month paychecks will include only the pay they earned for the first week of the month – before the shutdown.

“Over time, they won’t lose anything,” the secretary told reporters after the visit. “But you all know as well as I do that a lot of these young troops live pretty much paycheck to paycheck, and when I start to think about the inconvenience that it’s going to cause these kids and a lot of their families, even half a paycheck delayed can be a problem for them...So I hope they work this whole thing out.”
