>>Reason number 687 why I have quit flying for good.<<
Statistically, flying is much much safer than driving. When you saw a car accident, did you swear off driving?
Southwest had a similar incident with another plane a year or few ago. I seem to recall it was blamed on fatigue. Sounds as if the resultant investigation wasn’t as thorough as it might have been and may have reached overly optimistic conclusions, as I don’t recall they grounded any other planes as a result, other than a quick inspection.
A second instance of this type of skin failure means it must be taken much more seriously.
Never read the article or scroll down, it takes all the surprise out of life.
The flight originated in Arizona, so you KNOW it wad caused by Sarah Palin and all the rhetoric on talk radio.
Or maybe the plane knew that Laz vowed not to hit it.
It makes me angry that people would dismiss a hole in an airplane.
You don’t fall 30,000ft in most car accidents.
The top pic looks like the force went from inside the cabin to outside the plane, although it could have been curled up by wind pressure, I guess.
At 30,000 feet what could one make impact with? A meteorite???
Otherwise, you’d have some internal force pushing its way out and leaving the plane with edges pointing outward from the exiting force.
Somebody apparently needed more room for his carry-on.

And the -5K and -4K before and after it aren't a walk in the park either.
They've not taken a leadership position on airplane safety either.
How many Americans will die because of their wars?
I wonder what the cockpit recorder sounds like. I would imagine he told the controllers he was going down fast.
Still took 3-4 minutes to get down to a breathable altitude. The pilot probably saved some lives.
>Help me out, what is a gaping hole in the fuselage mean?
Judging by the pictures on yahoo news, it simply means “I’m going to die..”
No joke. I guess a fair number of people think that the aircrew would see it and do something if it were really important. I would take it a step farther than telling the flight attendants, I’d go to pilots (the door is open when the flight is first boarding). I’d tell them very succinctly that they have a hole in fuselage that you can see daylight through. Whether they blow me off or not, it’s three steps to the left off the jet, have a nice day.
I would also tell as many onloading passengers as possible, “If you’re comfortable with flying with gaping holes in the fuselage, then by all means, be seated and have a great flight.”
99.999% of the time, all it takes is one person to say something before a lot of people chime in, “Hey, this doesn’t look right! What’s going on?!” It’s always the hardest to step up first.
For a loss-of-cabin-pressure accident, pilots are trained to descend to 10,000 feet (breathable air) as fast as possible.
The characterization of that hole goes from “gaping” to “cavernous” if I’m riding the aircraft.
>>The cause of the loss of cabin pressure is the big frickin’ hole in the side of the jet. What they want to do is find the root cause of the structural failure. Reporters are idiots.
Worth saying again, especially that last.
Yeah, the Mythbusters debunked it, with the FBI watching out of extreme interest.
Yep, the MARINES of MCAS Yuma, to the rescue! Doing what is deemed impossible at all times. [and yes I am biased, I used to be stationed there!]
I am quite sure that the “Sudden drop in cabin air pressure” had something to do with that hole in the fuselage.
