WASHINGTON — The percentage of the nation’s black population living in the South has hit its highest point in half a century, according to census data released Thursday, as younger and more educated black residents move out of declining cities in the Northeast and Midwest in search of better opportunities.
The Rev. Ronald Peters, above, who moved last year from Pittsburgh to Atlanta, said the black middle class was more hopeful in the South than in the Northeast.
The share of black population growth that has occurred in the South over the past decade — the highest since 1910, before the Great Migration of blacks to the North — has upended some long-held assumptions.
Both Michigan and Illinois, whose cities have rich black cultural traditions, showed an overall loss of blacks for the first time, said William Frey, the chief demographer at the Brookings Institution.
And Atlanta, for the first time, has replaced Chicago as the metro area with the largest number of African-Americans after New York. About 17 percent of blacks who moved to the South in the past decade left New York State, far more than from any other state, the census data show.
At the same time, blacks have begun leaving cities for more affluent suburbs in large numbers, much like generations of whites before them.
“The notion of the North and its cities as the promised land has been a powerful part of African-American life, culture and history, and now it all seems to be passing by,” said Clement Price, a professor of history at Rutgers-Newark. “The black urban experience has essentially lost its appeal with blacks in America.”

Some folks can run but they can’t hide. When the vast majority of black Americans realize they are beholden to the RATS and unions, then they will achieve economic freedom. The great society did nothing more than keep black folks in poverty.
The blacks are moving to the South.
The Mexicans are moving North from Mexico -- where they will meet the Blacks moving South.
Will they gang up on Whitey or fight each other for the "preferred victim status" racial spoils?
Will the Blacks and Mexicans form rival gangs (as is reportedly the case in prisons) for mutual protection?
Speaking of gangs, who will run the drug trade? Will the Mafia move down too, from New York and New Jersey?
Makes me even happier I live in Minnesota.
And if it comes here, I'm moving to the Dakotas, or Montana, or Idaho, or Wyoming.

Cities ought to become a thing of the past. We’ll still need some industrial/transport functions—airports, shipping ports. Outside of that, what is the point of having a city? I have no use for them at all.
A friend of mine in Minneapolis (a Democrat) complains all the time about the Somalian takeover.

We need cities to keep liberals concentrated and contained away from me.
I live 70 miles from Detroit and about 30 miles from Ann Arbor and you would think we were deep in the bible belt from the conservative attitudes around here.
I wonder--do cities create liberals, or do liberals create cities? If there were fewer cities, would there be fewer liberals?

He isn’t well known outside the district due to the fact that he keeps pretty quiet but my congressman (Tim Walberg MI-7) is probably one of the 5 most conservative men in congress.
I live less than 10 miles west of NYC, and you’d think you were in Lima, Peru; every year fewer signs in English, more foreign flags hanging without an accompanying American flag (though it looks great during the World Cup; flags everywhere), less places for an American to eat...
NJ really has everything; mountains to the shore, just about every nationality, etc. You live in the large western “American sector” of NJ, though it is changing; I couldn’t believe how many Hispanics were out there when we took the children to pick pumpkins.
I noticed that while they reported the number of blacks declining in Detroit, the number of Hispanics had actually increased. They are inheriting the earth.
I am from western N.J. on the Del. river just south of the gap & unfortunately libs from east of us are bringing their politics w/them to our area.
But like you say it is still a great place to live.

Memphis and Atlanta are already on the way to being trashed and in some areas are dangerous to be caught in even during the day. It is beyond a crying shame. The socialist democrat welfare system is directly responsible for this.
Let me get this straight, middle class people of color are more hopeful living with racist southern hicks than they are with enlightened, northeastern liberals? Imagine that.
They know real bigots when they see them. Southerners are congenial, harmonious people, not the human trash they are portrayed as in the media. Black and white southerners alike are fine people. Who wouldn’t want to live among them?
