WASHINGTON -- Unemployment rose in nearly all of the 372 largest U.S. cities in January compared to the previous month, mostly because of seasonal changes such as the layoff of temporary retail employees hired for the holidays.
The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate rose in 351 metro areas, fell in only 16, and was unchanged in 5. That's worse than December, when the rate fell in 207 areas and increased in 122. Other seasonal trends, such as the layoff of construction workers due to winter weather, also contributed to the widespread increase.
Nationwide, the unemployment rate dropped to 9 percent in January from 9.4 percent the previous month. It ticked down to 8.9 percent in February. But the national data is seasonally adjusted, while the metro data isn't, which makes it more volatile. The metro data also lags the national report by one month.

Would someone note that of the 372 largest U.S. cities, how many are (were) controlled by Democrats?
Just in time for summer. Can’t wait for the peaceful demonstrations on every corner.
The increase in gas prices are already having its effect. Continued increases will drive unemployment even higher.
The hope and change they voted for is just getting started and already they don’t seem to like it.
But gubmint jobs in DC(District of Corruption) are booming.
Recovery Summer (the sequel) is just around the corner..
Once gas hits $6.00 per gallon, unemployment should hit about 5.6%...according to this administration.
At least the top 100.
BS.... This is March, the holiday crews are normally let go in January. Not buying the explanation.
Good point. Also, where is all the hiring for spring and summer jobs?
The job growth sucks, even here in Texas where things are much better than most states.
That was my first thought, as I am an owner in retail.
People will be eating less drive through fast food and old Jimmy Carter will be cleaning up on peanut butter.
Maybe limit classroom size to just 10 kids. After all, it's for the chilluns! < / sarcasm >
The Baraqqis can doctor the unemployment stats pretty easy as peeps fall off the “looking for jobs” roster.
But the amount of $$ coming in via SS and income tax receipts doesn’t lie. Those numbers still suck.
Understand your prespective.
I worked for 2 privately held wholesale hardware distributors for 35 years (outside sales/management/store planning/catalog publishing).
When I started in that business in 1972 there were 625 distributors of that type in the U.S. Now there are under 40.
There are also a lot fewer privately help retailers.
Hardware store model is pretty dead. Farm stores, Lumber Yards (in funk now with residential building almost stopped, except for remodeling), Paint stores, Plumbing retailers and Feed stores are still surviving. There has been some interest in some of those again with the corporate employment thing on it’s ear.
We must evict the “Won” from 1600 Penn. Ave. before things can pretend to get better. Along with some real house cleaning in the Federal Bureaucracy. We will need another House on Un-American Activities committee to begin to identify and punish the traitors who are destroying the nation.
Many of them are guilty of Treason. Intentionally destroying the nation.
And yet they claimed the unemployment rate dropped in January. Lying ba******.
