WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is calling for a comprehensive safety review at the 104 nuclear reactors in the U.S. in the wake of the Japanese disaster.

The president is asking the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to examine nuclear plants to ensure they can withstand earthquakes and other disasters. Obama said lessons can be learned from the unfolding nuclear disaster caused by last week's earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

In televised remarks Thursday, The president said U.S. officials do not expect harmful levels of radiation to reach the West Coast of the continental U.S., Hawaii or Alaska. He repeated the statement for emphasis.

So, I’d call that an unsuitable emergency deployment plan and faulty design.

I suggest you also go take a look at the hundreds of pics and videos available, there are no roads, there are no power lines. 10's of thousands are dead. Frankly, your ignorance disgusts me.

Call our Republican representatives and demand that they strenuously object to the President's initiative then. Ridicule it even.

Let's see how large your majority truly is.

"The president is asking the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to examine nuclear plants to ensure they can withstand earthquakes and other disasters."

Wonder if that includes Yellowstone going up or the eventual meteor/comet that slams into this rock? Got plan, obi-one?

Well, at least we can be thankful he didn't go into Merkel mode and shut down the plants.

EXCUSE ME BARRY, BUT you & Boxer & all the rest of the UNIFORMED LIBS better get some education before you start mass hysteria!

What do you think the NRC does all year, sit around & eat bon bons! They are constantly watching & checking & calling for upgrades as necessary!

Watched some of C-Span last nite where Boxer wants all nuke plants built before 1980 shut down & inspected. Good luck, shut them all down, that will leave maybe ONE online to provide power. She also was freaking out about the ones in Calif. cause they are built on "faults"! What does she want them to do, MOVE THEM?

How about we just shut down all the nuke plants in Calif for good, maybe that would make her happy!!! Amazing how ill informed the people on that congressional panel are & honestly, they just don't understand an answer when it is given to them.

Need to add this, Boxer could not understand that the earthquake itself did not take out the plants in Japan, it was the tsunami that affected their ability to cool the rods!

To me, he is president of nothing. He’s just a bad joke playing King on tax payer dollars and a trashy, low class, usurper in the WH.

Look stupid. Calling the government in to review government certified power plants....is well.....so communist. I have no desire to hear more of your uninformed BS.

there is nothing wrong with checking our nuclear plants , of course this will probay be used to close down plants and stop making any more. not good for America

This is done all the time, they weren't sitting around waiting for a disaster to happen! People really need to get educated about these things. The NRC is breathing down the necks of every nuke plant in the U.S. daily!!!!

Also, we already have in place, upgrades to prevent hydrogen explosions & off site power sources & other measures for cooling, so what happened in Japan could not happen here!

Alot of these upgrades were done after 9/11, the same modifications that would be done for weather related emergencies were done to prevent damage from a terrorist attack!

It’s so obvious that all of this is agenda driven when one considers the following hypothetical scenario. Had the Japanese reactors emerged unscathed from both the earthquake and the tsunami, intellectually honest people would be endorsing nuclear energy with all the vigor they are now expressing their concern. I simply can’t see Obama, Boxer, Cuomo, or any of these other communists going that route had the Japanese reactors survived intact.

TRANSLATION: In an effort to boost costs of electricity on households barely making ends meet, President B. Hussein Obama has ordered the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to examine nuclear plants to find any possible reason to shut them down long periods to make corrections, upgrades, or to shut down permanently.

"Too long have Americans been in warm homes with big TVs, air conditioning, computers, washing machines, hot water, while others in the world have no such conveniences. We're sorry, Mother Earth, and we're taking steps to correct these sins."

"What do you think the NRC does all year...(?)"

If they're like most government agencies, a good bit of their time is spent surfing porn.

Of course he has, so he can shut them down like he did offshore drilling and then make it prohibitively costly to start them back up.

"... Some people will kneejerk (and My GOD have they already) that there’s no problem and there just can’t be anywhere."

It's often the same cretins over and over again. Our right-wing version of the left's 'moonbats'.

No surprise you see the same screen names on the 'That wasn't no airplane! That was a Chinese MISSILE, and Obama ain't doing nothing about it!' threads from last fall, yet now Obama "does something" by calling for a revalidation of USA nuclear plant emergency procedures and they're sure it's a dastardly scheme to plunge America into chaos by turning off the power to their computers ... and Rascal electric scooters too, I bet.

There's tens of thousands of FR posters. We needn't take them all seriously.

Why waste this time.

Why not skip to the chase and order a shutdown and dismantling of all nuclear plants.

We won’t need them in Obama’s vision of America.

Indeed. Especially a duffus that believes the Japanese can go to Walmart and buy generators to run a Nuke plant.....

"Maybe go down to Home Depot and bring back a whole crapload of Honda generators"

Idiot. STFU.
