Yesterday I said "They were required by law to evacuate, now their dose rate has been raised from 100 mS (per hour? news article didn’t specify) to 250 mS"

Boy was I wrong, that's total dose. Once they work, for example 250 hours at 1 mS/hour (1,000 uS/hour), they are done, find another job. Mea culpa.

Maybe there is a reason it started snowing day before yesterday. Gives the clean up workers more time to find the dead, both people and farm animals.

We were all reeling from one more punch at these poor people (earthquakes, tsunami, no food, no heat, no water, then SNOW), maybe it wasn’t a punch at all.

But the containment vessels have held through the other earthquake, and subsequent earthquakes are going to be not as bad.

The only problem I see is with the spent fuel rods that were not in containment vessels.

“But the containment vessels have held through the other earthquake, and subsequent earthquakes are going to be not as bad..”

You can’t be sure of either parts of those statements.

Also, there is stress going on inside that containment vessel.

What if there is a different amount of stress going on at the time another quake hits in a structure that probably already has stress damage.

Too many variables to think nothing could happen now since it hasn’t already happened IF it hasn’t happened.

You can’t believe TEPCO.

Your flippant jingoism is repugnant.

Japan says may seek direct U.S. military help to cool reactors

And if they do that. Guess who the military is going to call on ...

What can I say?

It’s fun. Until you get hit with an event that you brought up but management refused to fund.

I noticed it does that sometimes. It goes up high in 60’s and 70’s for a second and then falls back down to the 30’s & 40’s.

I don’t trust TEPCO. I just think earthquake damage is not going to be the big issue. The largest aftershock could be around an 8, and that is so much less than a 9. I’m just not concerned about that.

Other issues I’m concerned about.

Any word on what kind of shape the pumps are in?

Thanks in advance to anybody who’s heard.

I wonder what Glenn Beck was talking about re: the book “Physics for Future Presidents” — he said there’s something on page 167 that has to do with Chernobyl that we all should know and he will discuss tomorrow.

Of course, I will be at work.

Good blog at New Scientist here:

http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2011/03/nuclear-crisis-radioactive-fue.html

Worried about SFP at dai-ichi #4, “recriticality” which the blog points out should not have happened.

Kyodonews on recriticality at dai-ichi #4:

http://english.kyodonews.jp/news/2011/03/78393.html

I am not certain how TEPCO could have been allowed to store fuel rods in the SFPs in such a manner as to permit recriticality under any conceivable circumstances...
