WASHINGTON (AFP) Radiation from nuclear plants damaged in Japan's earthquake is unlikely to reach US territory in harmful amounts, US nuclear officials said Sunday.
"Given the thousands of miles between the two countries, Hawaii, Alaska, the US Territories and the US west coast are not expected to experience any harmful levels of radioactivity," the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said in a statement.
"All the available information indicates weather conditions have taken the small releases from the Fukushima reactors out to sea away from the population," the statement read.
The office also said it sent two boiling-water reactor experts as part of a US Agency for International Development (USAID) emergency team helping respond to the crisis in Japan.
The NRC is coordinating with the US Department of Energy and other federal agencies in providing "whatever assistance the Japanese government requests" as they respond to conditions at several nuclear power plant sites following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the statement read.

Oh oh. I do not believe a thing they say. Now they say this?
sorry not buying it. potassium iodine in my house.
unlikely to reach US territory in harmful amounts

depends on what ya mean by the word ‘harmful’ when it comes to radiation. compared to what? a gamma ray burst,, a dirty nuke,, we are constantly bombarded by radiation, including from our own technologies at home.
Duck and Cover!
The potassium iodide is to block your body from absorbing the I131. It’ll take 9 or 10 days for any “plume” to make it here. I131 has a half life of about 8 days. You’ll be dealing with the nausea for nothing.

The dangers of low levels of ionizing radiation are grossly overestimated by the general public. Nothing I have read or heard makes me even the slightest bit afraid for the USA. Now if I were in Japan, that would be different..
The 50s are back!! That brings back memories..
When half the nation was covered by fall-out from early atomic bomb testing, Vegas was a rising empire, and the surf was up.. and we began to build dozens of nuclear power plants here at home.
You're still in your house? Geeez, friend. You ought to be secured in your bomb shelter by now. /s
Still waiting for the strontium-90 fallout from Russian nuclear arms testing in the 1950s-60s. I believe, according to the media hype at the time, deadly strontium-90 was supposed to be concentrated in precipitation. My science teacher in 7th grade took a Geiger counter to snow that had accumulated on the window sill and there was no radioactivity.
Some comments: Saipan, American Samoa are closer. I never expected any problem here in the first place. Likely Grants, NM has more background radiation than the area around the Japanese plants will experience.
I’ve had potassium iodide in my house for 5 years, stemming from rumors of an Al Queda plot to nuke/dirty bomb Los Angeles harbor. I’m 10 miles away. I’m also on the forefront of fallout from these Japanese nuke plants that havent been resolved yet—weather/storm dependent. I’ve been telling friends and family to get KI pills for this and other reasons. If it turns out we need em’, like one reactor does melt down, then there will be a worker evacuation and adjacent reactors will melt down also. This thing can turn awfully nasty if just one goes.
A local doctor on tv said compared to the typical dose from a CT scan, this Japanese emission is trivial.
Having survived the fallout of the numerous US and Russian atmospheric nuclear explosions of the 50s, I’m not terribly worried. Then again, maybe that’s why I’m only 5’-6” tall LOL.
I worry more about the Norks or Iranians launching nukes at us...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Half life means the radioactivity is reduced by half. So in 8 days time, the radioactive plume is at half its original power...at 16 days 1/4 power.
Seems to me it might be worth the nausea if you live in hawaii.
I should have addressed this to nobody because I wasnt talking to you,.
The article seems to be based on radiation released so far, with no speculation on a complete meltdown scenario.
When you are on a board like this....it’s assumed you are talking to everyone....and, really I wasn’t necessarily addressing YOU..you just presented me with an opportunity to expose my fears...FWIW....don’t take it personally
