First tsunami waves push into Hawaii
CNN international ^ | 3-11-11 | wire staff

Tsunami waves began rolling into Hawaii early Friday, with readings of between 6 and 8 feet expected in some areas following the giant earthquake that struck Japan.

Communities along much of the U.S. West Coast were under tsunami warnings, too.

The first impact in Hawaii was felt shortly after 3:07 a.m. local time (8:07 a.m. ET), according to Hawaii State Civil Defense, which issued a tsunami warning.

At 3:30 a.m., television images in Honolulu showed an increase in water coming ashore.

The National Weather Service said the waves could hit Oregon and California between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. local time (10:15-10:30 a.m. ET).

Honolulu is planning for several contingencies, because it is not certain how large the waves could be and where they may rush inland, Mayor Peter Carlisle told CNN.

"It is a very difficult situation to confront," Carlisle said.

Hawaiian Public Radio news director Bill Dorman told CNN some roads were closed as a precaution. CNN meteorologist Rob Marciano said he expected the waves to first strike the island of Kauai.

Hawaiian emergency officials reminded residents that tsunami evacuation maps can be found in front of their telephone directories. People were being advised not to make unnecessary phone calls and a coastal evacuation was conducted.

“...Other than the Regaan Library, what would we miss?...”

Dude, while I DO understand and usually appreciate dark humor and sarcasm...

...I have family out there, as do many, many others.

There’s AMERICANS out there who would be killed. That’s our people. Regardless if some of them are Lib assh*les. There’s others who aren’t.

Michael Moore did a belly flop into the ocean? Sorry, I couldn’t resist. It really isn’t a funny matter though.

The kid on the surfboard...yes, a giant flyswatter indeed. “Hot Fudge Tuesday”...

Hell of good book. Shows how “civilization” basically goes out the window in a few short hours...and savagery takes over.

“...One of my favorite books...”

Mine too. Need to dig it out an re-read it. Been many years.

“The Stand” is excellent too.

Shows what happens when society breaks down. Not pretty.

What does he use as his source? God, himself, science?

He uses science, and a great deal of observations of coincidental effects, which appear concurrently with earthquakes.

He's essentially pioneering the science of earthquake prediction. There's some very interesting reading at his site.

The Stand is excellent as well. Only book that kept me up for a whole 3 day weekend. I actually finished it in 3 days and I never read a book that fast.

The TV movie wasn’t that bad either.

“Down to a Sunless Sea” is another good end of the world-y book.

“...“Down to a Sunless Sea” is another good end of the world-y book...”

I will have to look into that one. “Swan Song” by Robert McCammon is a really good horror/post-apocalypse story as well.

Ever wonder what it is about that genre of book/movie that’s so compelling?? It’s sort of like the Zombie / Dawn of the Dead-type stories as well....(for me at least)...there’s something horribly fascinating about the “Well, what the Hell WOULD you do IF this actually happened...?” aspect.

But it’s actually not too hard to imagine - Katrina in New Orleans gave us a taste of what happens when society degenerates to its lowest common denominator.

I think that’s the REAL terrifying thing - the knowledge that those types of animals are out there, waiting for something catastrophic to happen, and dancing on the grave of society after it does...

And one more, and closer to reality - check out “Patriots” by James Wesley-Rawles.

No catastrophic asteroid strike - just an ecomonic monetary collapse and destruction of the system.

Hits very close to home - especially now with the assclowns we have running the country into the ground. Worth your time to read it, if you haven’t.

“It was a false alarm since the consequences they were warning about did not occur. How do they know the wave was from the tsunami and not a big wave part of a train? It didn’t act like a tsunami wave.”

Back in around ‘94 when I was working at the Four Seasons Maui down in Wailea, the island was in a tizzy about a big tsunami warning from (IIRC) a quake in water off Japan. Everyone was trying to get upcountry, and calling family and friends on the mainland to say their goodbyes — just in case. Well, the tsunami wave came (so they say), but the wave they tagged as the tsunami was actually smaller than other waves before and after. All the waves were miniscule. A lot of drama and, basically, a false alarm.

The moon is going to be it’s closest to earth in a very long time

That very long time has only been 18 years.

And it will happen many times during the average person's lifetime. It's not something we should be worrying about.

I was about 30 at the time, and I cannot remember if I knew, but I think I did.

I sure hope it isn’t a sign. It scared the beejeesus out of me, and I woke up yelling.
