Tsunami waves began rolling into Hawaii early Friday, with readings of between 6 and 8 feet expected in some areas following the giant earthquake that struck Japan.
Communities along much of the U.S. West Coast were under tsunami warnings, too.
The first impact in Hawaii was felt shortly after 3:07 a.m. local time (8:07 a.m. ET), according to Hawaii State Civil Defense, which issued a tsunami warning.
At 3:30 a.m., television images in Honolulu showed an increase in water coming ashore.
The National Weather Service said the waves could hit Oregon and California between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. local time (10:15-10:30 a.m. ET).
Honolulu is planning for several contingencies, because it is not certain how large the waves could be and where they may rush inland, Mayor Peter Carlisle told CNN.
"It is a very difficult situation to confront," Carlisle said.
Hawaiian Public Radio news director Bill Dorman told CNN some roads were closed as a precaution. CNN meteorologist Rob Marciano said he expected the waves to first strike the island of Kauai.
Hawaiian emergency officials reminded residents that tsunami evacuation maps can be found in front of their telephone directories. People were being advised not to make unnecessary phone calls and a coastal evacuation was conducted.

Amen!!!
“No big waves and no damage at all on any of the islands that I have heard of.”
That would be great news if that is true for all the Ilands, and better news for us in Washington which will be hit next.
We have a ground floor condo on Kaanapali on Maui, so I have been watchnig this since 4:00 AM our time.
They did have a bit of a tsunami wave after the Chile quake, but it wasn’t harmful. We watched it, pretty interesting watching the water recede and come back in, for quite awhile.
Not really. The time people start being to lax about it is when bad things generally happen.
This is bad news for some Hawaiians.
The wealthy leftists live along the shores of that state.
(Regreting that I cannot quote precisely), there is a statement in the Bible about the end times that talks about the “high places being made low.” That may refer to earthquakes as well as governments and other man-made powers.
Has Al Gore yet announced that this is “human-caused”?
This also will likely not amount to much.
Listening to the broadcast from Hawaii, saying the tsunami that devastated Hilo was the 10th wave coming in. So probably not all clear yet.
Stay safe.
We lived right on Pearl Harbor when I was stationed there and always worried that we’d have to flee to the hills in the middle of the night. It’d have been a traffic jam getting out of our housing area. Only one two lane road out.
Climate Change! Everybody limited to 1 sheet of toilet paper till the crisis ends!
That was my thought. My phones books go directly to the stove in the shop for fire starting. I'd be screwed.
Prayers for all afflicted by the tsunami. Now to worry about my sister in NZ.

Apparently Jim Burkland (sp?) was on Coast to Coast last night (3/10) at 1:00 right before the earthquake hit predicting a devistating earthquake would hit sometime very soon in the Ring of Fire. Coast to Coast has its share of kooks, but from time to time, Noory gets some amazing people. This Jim Burkland is ALWAYS on with his predictions, in my opinion.
This is the perfect storm. These things have always happened, but, not all at once and not all over the world. We are so close.
The Moon is very close to the earth and will be the closest on March 19th. Many scientists have predicted earthquake and volcanoes because of this.

About 20 years ago, I had a very vivid dream that left a lasting impression on me...I dreamt I was walking along a boardwalk next to the ocean somewhere in California, walking by a cove with a small marina.
I noticed that the water was receding...barnacle encrusted rocks with starfish on them began appearing, at first just poking out, then entirely exposed. Sailboats began to tilt, then rested on their sides.
The ocean receded out as far as I could see. I did not know what was going on, but it filled me with dread.
Passerby had stopped walking and talking, and as we all stared out at the distant horizon, which showed ocean floor and rocks all the way out, a thin, gun metal gray strip appeared.
As the ribbon extending from horizon to horizon steadily got thicker, the more mentally agile turned and began running, while those of us who didn’t understand just stood there dumbly staring.
Then we all ran, and as the water came in, I tried to climb a lamp post, then I woke up.
I remember that dream as vividly today as I did when I woke up.
Stay safe, Fish Hawk.
