Frustrated by rightward drift, some Arizona Dems push secession

One Arizona Democrat is so frustrated with his state's conservative politics that he's pushing a novel solution: secession. Paul Eckerstrom, the former Democratic party chairman of Pima County, has formed a political committee, Start Our State, to look into making Pima the 51st U.S. state.

Start Our State says its mission is "to establish a new state in Southern Arizona free of the un-American, unconstitutional machinations of the Arizona legislature and to restore our region's credibility as a place welcoming to others, open to commerce, and friendly to its neighbors." Eckerstrom told MSNBC yesterday that he and others in his party are acting out of their exasperation with a series of rightward moves by the state--a tough anti-immigration bill, cuts to education approved by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, and efforts by some lawmakers to "nullify" federal laws. Cuts to critical health care programs and loose gun laws have also helped give the state a reputation lately as a bastion of staunch conservatism, Eckerstrom explained.

The secession plan is a clever way to attract media coverage--and we at The Lookout are plainly not immune--but it's an obvious nonstarter. The measure would need to win approval from Pima County voters, then from either Arizona lawmakers or Arizona voters, and finally from both Congress and the president. That's not going to happen.

But that isn't stopping Eckerstrom from mulling names for his new state. He said he'd received several suggestions, including Baja Arizona, South Arizona, and Gadsden. That's a reference to the Gadsden Purchase of southern Arizona from Mexico, in 1854.

I think the CSA proclaimed the south half of Arizona to be the Confederate Territory of Arizona. This will amount to about the same.

Let them leave Arizona, and give them to Mexico.

Just like them to try to co-opt the name ‘Gadsden’. Gotta taint everything they can. *sigh*

Personally, if they really want the bottom bit of AZ, I say make them join with Mexico. No getting two more Dim Senators as a gift. Let them suffer being in the minority and having to watch as policies designed to fix the mess they caused are passed over their pin heads.

They have that right -- and we'd be better of without some of the more liberal members of their ilk. Let 'em go it on their own for while without the ability to leech off the productive members of society. It would be an interesting experiment to see how quickly they re-educate themselves.

The libs here have already turned Pima County and Tucson into a second rate psychotic blot on the rest of the state. Now they want to make it a country too? It should be named “Rathole.”

Boy, imagining the Democrats succeeding from the US and leaving the country to the good people who remain.

Hmmm...I’m trying to think of how they can make that sound like a bad thing...

Let them secede and let them take one or two states with them. Put up a very large barbed wire fence to keep them from sneaking back into the US of A.

Imagine the possibilities in other places too.

If the liberals in California had the SF Bay area and LA County secede, the rest of California would be far more conservative as a result.

If Chicago and/or Cook County seceded from Illinois, the remainder of Illinois as a separate state would be quite conservative.

Ditto, if you could pull Philadelphia out of Pennsylvania. Pull Portland out of Oregon. Pull New York City out of New York state, and see how upstate New York would be.

I know it’s all academic, but if the liberals want to go down this road, conservatives would be happy to play along, as with my examples above.

Maybe the other 49 states will do likewise. Then we could re-align into a red-state country, blue-state "protectorate."

Cut off their government assistance and force them to stop sponging off the honest taxpayers. Then revoke their citizenship and give them a one way ticket to Mexico.

Problem solved. That was easy.

This is exactly what their ideological "father" does.

There is no process defined in the Constitution to split a state. She would have better luck taking over part of Mexico. That can be done with some guns and cash.
