~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Bliss, Texas and New Mexico

Fort Bliss is a United States Army post in the U.S. states of New Mexico and Texas. With an area of approximately 1,700 square miles, it is the second largest such installation in the Army behind the adjacent White Sands Missile Range, and the largest TRADOC installation.

Nestled at the base of the rugged Franklin Mountains, Fort Bliss was established in 1848 to support settlers and act as a liaison to the Native American population and the Mexican government, making it one of the oldest Army posts.

In 1878, Fort Bliss was established as a permanent post; the Buffalo Soldiers of the Ninth Cavalry were sent to Fort Bliss to prevent further trouble over the salt beds and the usage of Rio Grande water for irrigation purposes.

In January 1914, John J. Pershing arrived in El Paso to take command of the Army 8th Brigade that was stationed at Fort Bliss. At the time, the Mexican Revolution was in underway in Mexico, and the 8th Brigade had been assigned the task of securing the U.S.-Mexico border.

In March 1915, under the command of General Frederick Funston, Pershing led the 8th Brigade on the failed 1916–1917 Punitive Expedition into Mexico in search of the outlaw Pancho Villa.

Learn More About The History Of Fort Bliss Here!

Fort Bliss is the home of seven Forces Command warfighting units - the 32d Army Air and Missile Defense Command, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade, the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, the 204th MI Battalion, and the 978th Military Police Company.

Over its distinguished history, Fort Bliss has served as an infantry post, a cavalry post, and the premier Air Defense Center of Excellence. With 1.1 million acres, this post is bigger than the state of Rhode Island and can accommodate every weapon system in the Army.

Excellent ranges and training area, coupled with the third longest runway in the nation, make Fort Bliss a premiere facility for training, mobilization and deploying combat forces. The Mission at Fort Bliss is to train, sustain, mobilize, and deploy members of the joint team to conduct global, full spectrum operations in support of the national military strategy, while providing for the well-being of the regional military community.

I think I must have gotten here after the problems were resolved...I didn’t notice even a slow-down. Glad I missed it! :)

Good for you getting the kitchen done soon. That would be great, I’ll bet, having a new environment there. I would love to do that. Mine is really dated. REALLY dated! LOL!

Good Tuesday, beachy...((HUGS))...my thermometer says -0.0

All day yesterday was spent fielding calls about no one getting their checks. Calls into the post office...hope for an answer this morning.
They left our office on Thursday morning per usual. The post office did the same thing to us about 6 months ago...set the bucket down and didn't look in til all the frantic calls on Monday. Of course, we get the black eye and vitriol. *sigh*

May you get your internet fixed and have a good Tuesday.

I am at work today, but rather be home in the garden. I will plant tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, peppers, shallots and other veggies. I may plant some beans a little later.

I just harvested the last of my fall / winter garden yesterday. I've got fresh carrots, turnips and shallots in the fridge. I let the regular onions in the ground since they are not quite big enough yet.

Sounds great! Hubby has started planting a few things...not
sure what they are. He is an “experimenter”, but I do notice
that he has a few bean poles in the back. Nothing much coming
up yet.

On the other hand, my tulips and daffodils are popping up nicely. :) Only one bloom so far, but I have hopes of many.
The irises don’t look great. The freeze killed a lot of the
leaves and they have to recover.

We have a number of lilies in full bloom too, and the honey bees love all the new flowers.

Awesome! It’s still a bit early for our lilies, but I can see
little shoots coming up which tells me that at least some of
them survived the hard freezes we had!

Enjoy them and and bees! Do you keep bees or just like seeing
them at work?

I wish I had a place to keep bees. We used to have over 50 hives when I was growing up on the farm. That was a lot of work, but the honey was great.

I know there has to be one or more honey bee trees in our neighborhood since we see so many. They also love the Japanese boxwood and Rosemary flowers.

Good morning, Ma, EGC, & Luvy ((HUGS))

Sorry I'm late getting to ya,
I lucked out and the IT guy came by to do somethingamajiggy to my computer and I explained the problems I'd been having

He said he will come by tonight to do the next upgrade but that I was going to have to get a new computer - Hallelujah!

I asked him to tell the boss that I would need one cause I had been asking.
Going for the iMac this time.
