~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Bliss, Texas and New Mexico

Fort Bliss is a United States Army post in the U.S. states of New Mexico and Texas. With an area of approximately 1,700 square miles, it is the second largest such installation in the Army behind the adjacent White Sands Missile Range, and the largest TRADOC installation.

Nestled at the base of the rugged Franklin Mountains, Fort Bliss was established in 1848 to support settlers and act as a liaison to the Native American population and the Mexican government, making it one of the oldest Army posts.

In 1878, Fort Bliss was established as a permanent post; the Buffalo Soldiers of the Ninth Cavalry were sent to Fort Bliss to prevent further trouble over the salt beds and the usage of Rio Grande water for irrigation purposes.

In January 1914, John J. Pershing arrived in El Paso to take command of the Army 8th Brigade that was stationed at Fort Bliss. At the time, the Mexican Revolution was in underway in Mexico, and the 8th Brigade had been assigned the task of securing the U.S.-Mexico border.

In March 1915, under the command of General Frederick Funston, Pershing led the 8th Brigade on the failed 1916–1917 Punitive Expedition into Mexico in search of the outlaw Pancho Villa.

Learn More About The History Of Fort Bliss Here!

Fort Bliss is the home of seven Forces Command warfighting units - the 32d Army Air and Missile Defense Command, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade, the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, the 204th MI Battalion, and the 978th Military Police Company.

Over its distinguished history, Fort Bliss has served as an infantry post, a cavalry post, and the premier Air Defense Center of Excellence. With 1.1 million acres, this post is bigger than the state of Rhode Island and can accommodate every weapon system in the Army.

Excellent ranges and training area, coupled with the third longest runway in the nation, make Fort Bliss a premiere facility for training, mobilization and deploying combat forces. The Mission at Fort Bliss is to train, sustain, mobilize, and deploy members of the joint team to conduct global, full spectrum operations in support of the national military strategy, while providing for the well-being of the regional military community.

I saw that there were fires.

We lost 4 kids in an Amish family due to swollen creek.

Weather can be very hazardous in a multitude of ways.

Think I'll go with Navy.

I know I've been a glutton for punishment the last couple of years, but the streak must end!!

But of course it's too early for wagers...I think I'll just toy with you two for awhile...:=)

How exciting for you! I hope the place is in good shape so
you don’t have to do too much right away. So you can just
enjoy it!

I did read of the Amish kids who drowned there. Very sad
for their family!

There were people killed in a highway accident

Saw that on the news, and was on pins and needles until they gave out more details. I was sad for the family in the accident, and glad it wasn't you.

Aloha Little Devil, Steely eyed Downeaster, Guardian of the Wall!

I don't know if I'll ever get back there to visit the Wall....don't know what I'd think or do on a first visit, searching for names and feeling overwhelmed. Something unmanly, I'm sure.

In country and in the air, we were stoic, resolved and reserved, but not after wards....not when we went home and others didn't. There was a shock at home coming and face to face with those who never knew duty, sacrifice or loss while protesting against those that served.

I grew a new shell for years but tears came back when my father (MMC, USN, retired) passed away. There are cracks in my shell now.
