What makes no sense is that, despite all this unnecessary pain and calls for "shared sacrifice," the governor has shunned the one obvious measure that would moderate the severity of budget cuts: extending the personal income tax surcharge paid by the richest 5% of New York taxpayers. Preserving the surcharge, by itself, does not do a lot to help in the coming budget year, since it currently extends through Dec. 31. But it would make a $5 billion difference next year, when the state would otherwise face the second year in a row of deep cuts in school aid, Medicaid, higher education and other areas.

Raise their taxes, drive them out, thus losing what they already pay. Brilliant!
It is sad people are so stupid. I wonder what they would do if you explain to them that all the rich liberals are bailing out of NY, so the “top 5%” of the earners in New York are the guys who decide whether or not to raise taxes. Do you really think someone would vote to raise their own taxes?
“Tax the rich. Feed the poor, till there are no rich no more.” Or something like that. Then what will the poor do?
See Tom Golisano and Rush Limbaugh about the flight of capital.
The leftist dinks in Minnesota elected, as Governor, a Twit-of-the-Year contestant who ran on just such a platform.
As a citizen of the State of NC I say, keep up the good work.
Their brilliant logic has increased the number of companies moving from NY to NC and other southern states.
Their loss is our gain!
“shared sacrifice”?
It is no sacrifice to give up what you have no right to in the first place. Cutting handouts of other people’s money does not involve a sacrifice.
Tax and spend forever.
Long after the money runs out.
I think that’s a GREAT idea! More “evil rich” will move to states such as Texas, helping our economy! And NY will fall further into economic ruin! Win-Win!!!
/only partly kidding
Frank Mauro and James Parrott should be fired for writing stupidly.
I always thought that line was telling. Not "until there are no poor no more", but "until there are no rich no more".
It's not about ending poverty, it's about spreading misery.
Frank Mauro and James Parrott should be fired for writing stupidly.
It never ceases to amaze me when they display the instinctive response of “why not raise taxes”?
One of these days, some state is going to create a tremendous “Going Galt” tax structure and attract well-to-do entrepreneurs from across the country fleeing these idiot states.
The libs are so in bed with the unions they wouldn;t even agree to both increase the tax on the rich and cut the budget.
If you want economic growth, real organic productive growth, you do NOT give more money to the Federal Government.
Boy, are we really that stupid about finance (we’re in debt), economics, (free market capitalism, not fianancialism, or collectivism) and basic math (2+2=4)
Starve to death. But it won't be their fault. Nothing's ever their fault.

Texas is doing a lot, but they seem to be the closest to “going galt”. If some states would assert their 10th amendment protections they could “go more galt” too.
